Hi, Can anyone recommend the best insurance co. for my son a 17 yr old first time driver. Best quote I could find was for kwik fit at £1300 and that was putting him down as a named driver on third party, fire and theft. Thanks for any help

When i was 17 / 18 i found Direct Line and Zurich to be cheapest. Although after reading this article and following the guidelines i have just got the best deal ever with more than :j (but at 23 im starting to get age and experience on my side now)
Hasting Direct is also another company that i find reasonable every year
    Good Luck

Agree the value when you take out the insurance (special policies are available for old cars which are difficult to value).

You mean use all Martin's tricks (including cash back) to get a nice low quote (using an estimated value) (in particular £250 car value produces an £82 comprehensive quote) and then - armed with the photos - agree the car's value?

No - Martin's tricks work for standard off the peg policies - your questions relate to a 21 year old car, who's value would need to be agreed at the policy's inception if you want it insured for its correct value. You wouldn't be able to get this all done online via an insurer merchant via a cashback site.

My wife and I have insured our cars with Liverpool Victoria for years, and I have to be honest and say that due to pressure of work in the past, I've just blindly payed the premiums demanded each year.

Now that I'm retired and can afford the time, I'm into challenging everything. They've just sent my wife's renewal through and quoted £319 which I thought was a bit over the top. So I entered her details on CompareTheMarket.com and nearly fell off my chair when from a list of some 42 quotes from different companies, Liverpool Victoria turned out to be the cheapest of the lot, and £125 cheaper than their written quote.

So I was straight on the phone to them. I swear I heard the chap's chin hit the floor when I told him about their computer quote. :rotfl:
Ten minutes of confirming details and a revised policy has been drawn up saving us £125. Just wish I'd taken the trouble to challenge them years ago.

been with Zurich for my car insurance for the past 4-5 years.

My bank now has an offer where they would beat the renewal quote atleast by 10% (which they did when i tried giving my details online). But the renewal price which I entered was more than a year old. I haven't got the renewal quote for this year, but was wondering where I stand.

Would they want to literally see the renewal documents before giving out this new policy? will it be illegal if I carry on with this and then they could make it completely void when or if I have a claim.

    thanks

The offer you have taken will have ts + cs (which are bound to include you providing evidence of your renewal). If you break the ts + cs you leave yourself open to having your new policy voided.

Check out what the terms are, and if you have broken them, then cancel the policy now and start again. If the policy hasn't yet started you may be able to cancel without penalty.
  • thanks Quentin,

When I realised what I was doing and went though the small prints, I stopped it halfway and have saved it for future use. thought I should get some expert help before carrying on

Just put in a request for insurance for DD. 2 years NCB.

Last years price £600 from Quinn, their website shows £626 this year.

Via Compare The Market get a quote of £437 for Swinton.

Via Quidco to Swinton for cashback of £55 the site shows "enter this prmo code for £40 cashback". At the end it says "buy now for a £20 voucher" <Edit> turns out this latter is for home insurance</edit>. Price £455. So thats £360.

    It pays to shop around!
  • I dedicated a couple of hours to sorting out a decent price for my car insurance. I'm 23, female and 6 years no claims so i was quite impressived with renewal quote of £239. But decided to check around. Did a couple of comparison site quotes. Got a good price of £190 - saving £49. Then went through quidco - cash back £68. So if cash back is paid its a saving of £117 compared to renewal. 12 months insurance for £122 :j i was literally jumping up and down, my friends are so jealous.

And it took less than an hour, if i wasn't my own boss i'd be telling my boss my time is worth £120 per hour :rotfl:

After the advice in the article i've found that First Direct are going to be the cheapest option for me.

Renewal quote is £925 from LV so they'll do it for £850 and 0% instalments.

Cheapest on price comparison sites was like £900 and then would have to pay extra on instalments.

I'm 23 but only have 1 years experience & ncb by the way
