Hubby's insurance was up for renewal on the 21 January and I decided to hunt round for a better quote. I got one through a brokers that was about £100 cheaper but it was with a company I didn't really know, so I asked Privilege if they'd do a price match. They said they wouldn't but would do a £50 price match for new customers. Hubby had been with them for years so I asked why they aim all the special deals at new customers, but do nothing to keep the old customers happy. The guys answer was 'our prices are low enough'. Obviously not the case as I could save £100 by going elsewhere.

Anyway, out of curiousity I decided to go on Privilege's web site and just see what that threw up. How shocked was I!!!! The exact same cover that my hubby had was £182 cheaper than their renewal notice. Rang them back but they still wouldn't match that price as it was an 'internet only application price', so I cancelled his renewal and took out the same policy but as a new customer.

I think that is just madness - I know companies want new customers, but surely keeping the existing ones is also important??

My insurance (also with Privilege) is up for renewal in March and I intend to do the same again. Fingers crossed I can get nearly £200 off as well.
  • My car insurance is due for renewal, and I was quoted £280. I used the screenscrapers to get other quotes, and the best one was £251. I then phoned my current insurer and challenged them to beat it, and they reduced their quote to £247 in order to keep my business! Just goes to show. One thing I would say is to be aware that when you start getting online quotes, you inevitably end up with insurers phoning you (as you have to give a contact number), but if you can handle this then it's worth doing as Martin suggests. When I clicked through to MoneyExpert to try and get cashback, they started phoning me while I was still online! Bit of a pain.
  • I am new to the forum but have been receiving Martin's emails for a while now. I just wanted to say a big THANKYOU for his recent advice on car insurance. My renewal notice just came through at £383.00 and through following Martin's advice I found a quote for £279.07 and will be hopefully getting £50 cashback for booking through moneysupermarket.
I have exactly the same cover, excess and benefits that I do with my current insurer but I have saved £154.00 by following Martin's advice. Thankyou.

  • Just a heads up. I've just had a look at my credit report and it is covered in "ROYAL & SUN ALLIANCE INSURANCE PLC" credit checks (30 in total). Turns out every time I used confused.com to get a quote, I got a credit check from them each time. For those who don't know what that means, banks, credit card companies, phone companies, insurance companies or anyone associated with money might have alarm bells ringing when they see so many credit checks carried out in a short space of time (as they may think I having been going mad applying for lots of credit) and thus refuse to approve me for a credit card / bank account / good interest rate etc etc.

So just bare that in mind if you use confused.com and tinker bits to see if something makes a difference to your insurance or to see how much insurance is on a new car you're thinking of buying.

I also noticed that Churchill did this, not sure if any of the other car insurance comparison sites do this.
  • I was quouted £677 3rd party with Quinn for a Ford Fiesta P reg, 1.3. I changed my current insurance over to that car from a 1.2 Clio N reg and my insurance was £578 this year, so it has gone up £100.

Endsleigh are quouting £578 fully comp, but I want to be able to drive other cars like I could with Quinn. I'm 20, so am I allowed?

What I find incredible is the vast range of quotes obtainable online for exactly the same set of information.

I've just checked on CompareTheMarket.com to see if the renewal quote I've just received for my Honda Jazz is reasonable. After submitting all our details (my wife is a named driver too) the website came back with quotes from 54 different companies.

They ranged from £154 (The AA) through to £406  (HSBC)!

25 quotes were for varying sums below £200, and 29 quotes for varying sums above £200. It's simply crazy that there should be so much variation.
