  • I've just renewed my car insurance using the broker "bestadviceuk". Following trying all the comparison internet sites, they have found comparable cover for about 15% less than the best from Confused etc.
They can also provide separate legal assistance cover for £5 instead of the £20 -25 that most insurers quote.

    Might help somebody .........

I’ve just gone and got a new quote for my car that came up £120 cheaper than my current price. so I rang up Norwich union my current policyholder who i've been with for 5 years and the fella on the phone said that they don’t compete with others companies until my policy is due to expire in may. I asked if there is any thing he could do and he said no. so hear are my questions to any one with an answer, could I leave Norwich union before may and go with the cheaper company or would they charge me, or should I say that to them to try and jeer them up into matching the price.

any help would be good thanks
Almost all companies will give you a full refund on the cover you havn't used these days. Paticularly if you have been with them for more than a year. Norwich Union do give a full rebate if you havn't made a total loss claim in the year that you wish to cancel so my advice is to call and if you do get the full refund then swap and save. P.s I work in the insurance industry so you can rely on my reply!

Cool. Any other examples of companies that give full pro-rata refunds? I know for a fact that the Budget group don't

You cannot rely on this at all!

Although they may give a full refund on the unused cover, what timhutton neglects to say is that virtually every insurer makes an admin charge for a cancellation which is deducted from the refund due.

In NU's case, this is £52.50. This is from the NU policy regarding cancellations once the 14 day cooling off period has expired:
....you will be entitled to a refund of the premium paid, subject to a deduction for the time for which you have been covered calculated as a proportion of the time for which the insurance would have provided cover and an administration fee of £52.50 (including Insurance Premium Tax at the appropriate rate) to cover any costs incurred by us in issuing the policy.
  • i just looked at most of sites and i have been quoted £1387. this is cheaper by £613. is it worth cancelling current poilcy and getting this one? only had policy about 2 months, so shouldnt have to much to pay would i???

Check with your insurer what it will cost before you cancel (as already posted, the advice given above by timhutton is wrong!)

  • Hi,

Never written a post on this website before so not sure if I'm writing this in the wrong place but was just wondering if someone could help.

My car got broken into twice the other week. Thinking I was going to claim I called up my insurance company. As they were closed on the Sunday I was asked if my car was secure (which it wasn't as the door was bent wide open and the glassed smashed) so after telling them it wasn't it got towed away. It then got towed again the following day to a garage for it to be assessed.

I later found out my car was a right off and as my car was so old I wasn't getting much for it. On top of that I wasn't able to cancel my insurance for the rest of the year (when I'd only just taken it out) and it would also have gone up by 30% the following year as I had claimed. So I then decided it would be more cost efficient in the long run not to claim but instead to cancel my insurace and to settle any costs owed.

However, I am now being charged £87 for the first call out charge, £53 for it staying in the first place over night and a further £87 for it to be moved to the next garage!! I thought this was a bit excessive and was wondering if anyone knew of any way to reduce those costs? As far as I was concerned I would just have to pay £87 for the first move, not being aware of the other jobs (as no-one even told me what was going on or even seemed to know where my car was!!). Please help!

You cannot ever get your money back for cancelling a policy once you've made a claim on it.

You instigated a claim, and your insurers proceeded with it, now you want to cancel the claim, then you are stuck with the costs already incurred.
