On the issue of insurance for vehicles left in the road, the relevant law is s.143 or the Road Trafiic Act:
143 Users of motor vehicles to be insured or secured against third-party risks

    (1) Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act—
    (a) a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act, and
    (b) a person must not cause or permit any other person to use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that other person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act.
    (2) If a person acts in contravention of subsection (1) above he is guilty of an offence.
    (3) A person charged with using a motor vehicle in contravention of this section shall not be convicted if he proves—
    (a) that the vehicle did not belong to him and was not in his possession under a contract of hiring or of loan,
    (b) that he was using the vehicle in the course of his employment, and
    (c) that he neither knew nor had reason to believe that there was not in force in relation to the vehicle such a policy of insurance or security as is mentioned in subsection (1) above.
    (4) This Part of this Act does not apply to invalid carriages.
It states, 'use', however under the definition of 'use' relevant to the Act this extends beyond driving, it includes the car simply being present on the road (I believe that there was a case where a car up on bricks on the road was deemed to have been 'used' on the road). Basically if you leave it on the road uninsured then it can be seized and crushed under s.165 of the same Act.

I can't make any sense of this bl00dy car insurance quote malarky..

Just did a quote for my 17 year old son on Confused.com for a Fiat Punto 1.2 ELX 8v...2000 reg....on a FULL licence the cheapest came out at with Endsleigh at £1994.50....

I then did exactly the same quote but on a provisional licence and Endsleigh came out at £4036.11....I was led to believe it goes UP AFTER you pass your test...

Pulling my hair out here trying to get the best quote!!!!

EDIT...Just entered the same details again on the Endsleigh site and the quote has gone UP again!

Do they just make these prices up as they go along!

    Hi folks,

i have just cancelled my Car Insurance Policy with Kwik-Fit due to the car being scrapped.

I phoned their Customer Care number and requested cancellation, which they obliged no problem telling me that I had to fork out about £85 to cancel.. Shock horror.. "but its in the Terms and Conditions she said". So I read the Policy Summary which referred me to Section 7 of the Policy Booklet ( not up front on the Cancellation section of the Policy Summary which just refers to the 14 day cooling off period.). Its actually under Section 8 of the Kwik Fit Motor and Legal Expenses Wording Booklet which states as Useful Information as a footnote, " We will charge our commission if your ploicy is cancelled after the 14 days. This is to cover our processing costs. This amount varies and we will have told you about it before you bought the policy...." If they did, I dont remember, maybe overwhelmed by finding a cheaper policy this passed me buy. Its just another case of Caveat Emptor...just thought i would flag it up. (Oh, and buy the way, got 100 quid for the scrapped car.. good job!)..

The regulator of insurance providers is the FSA and they require all key terms such as fees for cancellation to be clearly discolsed when you buy. It's not enough to bury them in the policy document they should be included in the short policy summary that you get with your quote or when you buy, and may also need to be verbally disclosed if you buy over the phone. If that didn't happen here you can complain to get your cancellation fee back.

They don't need to be verbally disclosed. The insurer only has to specify fees for amendments and cancellation under the 14-day cooling-off period in the policy summary. Full cancellation terms for after the cooling-off period can be contained in the policy booklet and referrred to in the summary.

i'd reccommend Pass Plus - My first year of insurance on my own name saved me just short of £500 with norwich union. (and SHhhh.. but i didnt do it.. Driving instructor sold me certificate for £25.. hehehe)

as a retired ADI i can hardly believe that a driving instructor would put his livelyhood at risk by selling a pass plus certificate.
driving instructors can make a very good wage, and if they were found to be doing such a foolish and dangerous thing as this, they would without any doubt loose their adi licence
if this is true then the instructor should be removed from the register:mad:
  • This happens all too often unfortunately.

The fact is that many passplus courses are subsidised by councils etc and can be done for little more than this anyway, without the need to defraud insurance companies (yes, this is illegal and if your insurance company find out then you may find yourself uninsured, refused further insurance and with large legal bills if you are involved in an accident).

When it comes to something like this, then after the £800 - £2000 it often costs to learn to drive, the benefits of a course costing between £60 and £150 should be obvious.

I just heard today that NU are withdrawing their pay as you go car insurance. It was saving me hoardes. they 'normal' policy wasn't the cheapset for me by quite a way, and I'm guessing I'm going to get something similar offered. Is anyone else in the same boat? Have NU contacted you yet? What sort of offer aer they giving you and what about the device in the car?
