Hi, just cancelled my elephant car insurance because we are going to SORN the car and they want £45 for the priviledge of cancelling the policy! This is apparantly a charge for 'admin'. Surely £45 is a bit excessive for someone to press a little button on a computer!!! even if there was slightly more admin than that its still excessive isnt it? Or am I just being daft?

I dont know the ins and outs of the reclaim bank charges business but could this be a similar thing? Insurance companies charging unreasonable amounts to cancel a policy?

It makes mad and depressed that these huge profit companies are just take take take from the hard working little man!
totally agree - today i cancelled policy (after only one day) with post office because they refused, for no reason, my request to add additional driver; for this very minor admin action they are charging me £91. Is this the peoples rip off post office?

I have just used Martin's technique and while it did save me money about £100, there is a minor flaw. The cheapest quote overall was from Moneysupermarket and it was an Admiral quote for £588 (high because I had a vehicle stolen from my home recently). Anyway, I then went to the other sites and got quotes for many companies but the Admiral one was still the best. I then tried to buy the Admiral policy through moneysupermarket but couldn't so had to call them up at which point they told me that the quote was £651 and this was because I had done so many recent internet searches. Looking back this makes sense as each price comparison site gave an increasingly worse quote for Admiral.

Anyway, luckily I requoted on the admiral site directly and secured a deal for £602 so at least the technique found me the cheapest insurer although I could have said a further £14 by not searching beyond the first comparison site.
Hi, just a word of friendly advice, I had a fully comp policy with Admiral, who were the cheapest at the time. I had a claim on my windscreen and spent 6 months arguing with them about whether or not it was covered. Admiral had the nerve to tell me that I had fraudulently ammended their policy document! The windscreen was of course covered, and replaced at their recommended repairer (Who in turn did a bad job and didn't stick it in correctly, damaged the ar and the windscreen fll out about 2 weeks after they fitted it). Eventually the windscreen was repaired correctly, by the vehicle manufacturer, who in turn charged admiral the full cost. Very shortly after this, I discovered that the delightful people at Admiral had cancelled my policy due to the arguement, and had conveniently forgotten to tell me. (Found this out from the police who had stopped me for a "random routine check", I presented them with my certificate of insurance and they checked saying it was invalid - fortunately the Officer was most understanding)

The car was immediately re insured with a different company.

The interesting thing here is that after I called to speak to Admiral about it, and eventually got through to Henry Englehart (The Chief Executive) I got a FULL refund of the premium and the cost of the new windscreen. Which meant that not only had they refunded their own policy, they had inadvertently paid for my new policy and given me a tidy profit in the meantime.

I have heard, quite recently, that there have been some similar issues from the EUI group of companies (Admiral Elephant etc) where they have tried it on with customers, saying that the policy does not cover the claim, where it quite clearly states in the policy document that they do cover.

I think the point here is that cheapest may be good for your pocket but will they do you justice in the event of a claim?

This may sound a bit cheeky but if you have a claim, regardless of the insurer, make sure you read the policy inside out and upside down before you go to them, as there is a chance that they will try it on.

What makes you think that if you were to get a more expensive policy that it would be easier to make a claim?

I've done a few Quidco claims for LTSB car insurance. All have tracked successfully.

However, this year I have noted that LTSB are not the most competitive by by far, even going via Quidco.

You cannot insure with LTSB and get the benefit of going through Quidco without actually doing so.

Like you, this time I have found that Saga are most cost-competitive.

Isn't Martin's advice on cashback to find the cheapest price BEFORE cashback and only then start looking if cashback is available?

I.e. dog wagging the tail, not tail wagging the dog.

I think all the cashback sites say that cashback isn't guaranteed.

I've given up on Quidco. I use topcashback.com, much more efficient and no membership fee. Tracks very quickly and pays out quickly too.:j

Seriously though, have you read the article? http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance

I've just saved myself £87 on my Direct Line Car Insurance by doing an online quote with Privilege. DL said that they would match the online price from Privilege or Churchill - all I had to do was create a direct quote with these 2 companies (NOT via a comparison site). As I had already shortlised Privilege (from using a comparison site) it wasn't a great hardship!

(PS I think this is because Direct Line / Privilege / Churchill are all owned by the same company - they use the same quote engine - so it easy for customer care staff to check your claim).
