Toddy: Dont know how 'legal' this is, but have you investigated if YOU insure the car with 17yo son as a named driver?

Anyone: Is there any truth in the rumour that if you mis-spell your surname when getting a renewal quote from your existing insurer (via comparison sites), you get a cheaper quote?

Not at all legal if the 17 year old is the main driver.

As for your 2nd question: :rotfl:

  • RE;- Klint, The companies are trying to profit from customers' laziness to shop around.

Just had a multi-car policy renewal quote of £1815.37, did a new quote online but changed name and house number to my neighbours ( as a new customer) premium reduced to £1024.75. Spoke to customer services and yes quotes are computer generated and rely on customers contacting for a better price.
  • ANY ADVICE welcome..... Had an accident in which the other party admitted full liability. After having the underwriters inspection (MY INSURERS)they settled as a class C write off (uneconomic to repair). I retained the car as i disputed there quote for repair work, and was told it would need a new MOT and a VIC to put it back on road. Repairs and MOT have been done (strangely for much less than the quote) but cannot have a VIC done until 11th April as VOSA are so busy. VOSA who organise these said car can still be driven as long as valid mot and road fund licence. Which it has.

Rang the Insurance customer care lot to inform them of delay to the VIC, and now underwriters have cancelled my policy.... They have told me that due to having a claim (NOT MY FAULT) that I also lose my years insurance premium. This has left me out of pocket in excess of £300 in lost insurance premium alone surely this Can't be right the other blokes Insurers have admitted FULL liability! So why am I the one suffering in all this..... ANY HELP gratefully recieved.:)

We had a renewal quote from Swift and I went online to see if I could better it. Couldn't find anything worth paying the £20 for proof of no claims from Swift, so we were letting it go through (direct debit due 16th April).

OH went to Post Office today to tax the car, and they noticed that the insurance is almost due, so offered to find him a quote. Then they said they couldn't access the system as "your wife has left it open so we can't get in"??? I haven't been on a comparison site for a week and have certainly not left anything "open" as I'm now away and have shut my laptop down and removed the dongle.

Anyway they then got him to phone through (they got the number so not sure where he was phoning), and eventually they came back with a quote nearly £50 lower than Swift's, which he accepted.

Makes me wonder why, when I did the online search, the Post Office was way down the list. I think these comparison sites are something of a scam, because it now seems you can get lower quotes the old fashioned way.

Oh and when he phoned Swift to tell them not to take his money as he's got cover elsewhere, they offered to review their quote (i.e. knock a bit more off). It's scandalous - we are not talking a couple of quid here, and people are being robbed.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Who did you make the claim with, the third party, or your insurance, and who paid you for the claim, was it your insurers or theirs.
Did you have to pay your excess, and are you claiming this back?

Is that Swift, rather than Swiftcover? I recently called Swiftcover to get my NCD proof and they said they'd put it in the post, no fee.

If you're looking to cut back your insurance there is an awesome site I came across. I used it like a check list as I went through and found ways I could save on my insurance! Hopefully it will be as much help to you as it was to me! Check it out: http://www.debt-tips.com/blog/item/10-simple-ways-to-save-on-your-insurance-in-2011
  • Saving money on car insurance is really simple. This is the site that I Use: buycarinsonline.com but there are more.
  • Hi Just after some advice. My son has been insured with Elephant for the past 8 months. He is about to buy another car and wanted to continue insuring with them. The online quote was less than the car he is insuring at the moment. We spent most of this evening either trying to understand what was being said or on hold or just cut off. Intially he was told he could insure it at the same price as his existing car, we were then cut off. We eventually spoke to someone else 30 mins later who wanted to charge him much more than the internet premium, because he was paying by installments. A small surcharge I can understand but they wanted over £200 for the next 4 months. The premium itself was more than £2000 and not £1499. I was told that it varies due to 'Factors' but they were unable to tell me what these were.I was told that we could either cancel the existing policy and be charged £47.50 or take out a new policy if we thought it would be cheaper. We decided it would be cheaper to take out a new policy which was still more than advertised but better. I left my son to do this and then advised him to cancel his existing policy. I then wondered whether it would effect his no claims. He will have 1 full year this August. We have now found out that his 8 months are not counted and he will start from scratch as of tomorrow. Surely this is not right, its the same insurance company!!! We tried to call back to cancel but was put on hold until the shut at 10pm. The whole reason we went for this option was the hope that his premiums will be reduced because of his no claims. At no point during the hours of phone calls was it mentioned that his no claims would be effected. Sooooooo mad  They prey on the young and people like myself that dont know everything there is know about insurance. I have emailed them asking for the policy to be cancelled but no doubt we will be stung with another cancellation charge.
Any ideas would be gratefully recieved.
    Thanks

You only "earn" NCD for a completed policy year. So if he cancels the policy now and starts again there will (correctly) .be no NCD awarded for the 8 months the policy has run
