Took out a car insurance policy last week with Performance Direct of Romford, Essex. Although it does not start until tomorrow (Friday 25th March) when I tried to cancel it, they informed me that I will have to pay a policy set up charge of £45. It does state this in their small print but I was not made aware over the phone when I took the policy out. I thought you have at least a 7 or 14 day cooling off period for over the phone sales. Can they legally still charge or is this just contractual bull.

Just trying to find a comparison site that I can actually understand and use - proving easier said than done, despite the adverts.

What on earth is the answer to "How many years as a named driver without making a claim do you have? PROOF REQUIRED"?

I have been driving since 1979 and have never made a claim. How am I supposed to prove this? I currently don't have any insurance in my own name as I drive on husband's policies.

Also as an aside we have discovered that Swift charge £20 admin fee to send a copy of your no claims years, which they craftily don't show on any of the documents you can print off. Daylight robbery . Obviously it is to ensure you don't go elsewhere, but I'm not convinced it is actually legal, and certainly not ethical, to charge a fee for something that should have been provided automatically.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Oh my god just has my swiftcover renewal by email, at the moment we pay £30 a month for two people one 34 and partner 30 to drive a mini cooper no claims/convictions, £50 voluntary excess.

Swiftcover have now put the monthly amount up to £50, 66% more and seem to think this is acceptable. Can reduce it to £39 a month if we agree to voluntary excess of £1000, I have never ever had an excess that high even when I was 19 with a van.

What is going on they won't budge and offered us luck in finding a lower price.

    Any advice.

last year we got our car insurance for about £350, the cheapest I have found so far after using the main insurance comparison sites is £520.

Are other people getting increases like this? nothing had changed in our situation.

    + any ideas gratefully received.

Yes, it does indeed seem normal and out situation has not changed but a 66% increase

    Hi All

    need sum advice please?

Sold the car last year and had built up 9 years NCD. My understanding is you can have a gap of 2 years before losing these, true?

Well the dilemma is do I buy a car before the 2 years is up to benefit from the NCD I have?

    OR

Just wait until I want a new car, which at the moment I am in no rush to do, then pay the extra on the insurance?

How much roughly would the difference be? If it gonna be big, say over £500/yr extra on the insurance then obviously I would be better getting a cheap run around just to keep the full NCD.

I look forward to anyones views or experience on this?

    thanks in advance

    JK :) (age 34)
the difference would probably be in the region off 70% of the full premium price i.e. if you would normally be offered a quote of around £300 with your ncd this would go up to around £1000 if indeed you would be accepted at all as many of the more well known will not accept you as a customer without any ncd

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of threads about this on this site. You just need to read them.

Your right, there are, but thats an awful long time to read every thread to see if its relevant .:o
  • Toddy: Dont know how 'legal' this is, but have you investigated if YOU insure the car with 17yo son as a named driver?

Anyone: Is there any truth in the rumour that if you mis-spell your surname when getting a renewal quote from your existing insurer (via comparison sites), you get a cheaper quote?
