There are some insurers who don't charge admin fees for online policy changes (eg aviva, swiftcover), but if you make changes that affect the risk, then you will always end up with premium changes (though not necessarily increases!)

is there any way out of this situation - maybe going for a regular insurer and avoiding the admin charges and premiums to certain extent - I understand that the area, address, street parking woud change the premiums
The only thing that you can do is to select the policy that you think you want and then hae a look at the terms and conditions relating to it.
  • Is there are any opportunity to get no claims bonus if you are from different country, and you had no any claims?Because Ive paid about 160 p\m for an old Ford Escort 1.6 petrol
  • very well said it is fine to go with the cheap insurance but keep in mind that if u make any changes the charges may go up.
  • admin fees are becoming the norm not the exception with every insurance firm as they fight to produce the lowest quote on new business and if you think you can just bail out and go elsewhere, then they'll catch you on the way out with a cancellation fee particularly in the first year of a policy where it is often double the normal fee. And you don't have to move house or change car either add a driver take a driver off even temporary, add a green card (foreign use extension),add temporary vehicle, change occupation, change main driver, change name (how dare you get married/divorced) change direct debit details etc etc etc new documents have to be issued and the motor insurance database has to be updated (and there's no way there gonna pay for it) only way usually to avoid is to make changes only at time of renewal when you have the power to let policy lapse naturally.....

If you make any changes to an expensive policy the charges may go up also. Charging for making changes to insurance policies isn't confined to the more expensive variety,

Here's hoping one of you knowlegable people out there can help.
My car was recently hit whilst it was parked, and I was indoors having dinner. My neighbour heard the crash and saw the perpetrator driving off - so I duly gave his details to the police and my insurers. A check by my insurers showed that he is uninsured :-(, so obviously I'm not happy.
Apart from the fact that I have had to pay the excess to get my car repaired, I have been told by my insurers (Aviva) that this will go down on my record as a 'fault' claim as they haven't anyone to claim the cost of my repairs from.
How can this be my fault? As I will have to declare this 'accident' for the next 5 years when I re-insure, I'm also going to be paying for damage to my car that I had no control over, for a very long time.
Surely there must be something that I can do to ensure that I don't get penalised for having my car in the wrong place at the wrong time?
    Thank you

This is off the Aviva site, were you not fully comprehensive?
    Uninsured driver promise

If you're hit by an uninsured driver and it wasn't your fault your no claims discount won't be lost – and you may be able to recover the cost of any excess you have had to pay. You will need to provide
    • the vehicle registration and the make/model
    • the driver's details
This promise is for comprehensive car insurance policies only and applies where the driver of your car was not at fault for the accident.

  • if anyone is interested i recently tried to get car insurance for my son who is 17, i was getting quotes from the AA for £10,000 and from Aviva for £12,000 the lowest was from Quinn for £1,800 BUT thanks to Martin Lewis i tried coverbox.co.uk and got a full comp quote for £1,200. there are restrictions in driving (not allowed between 11pm and 5am, also restricted in peak rush hour times) but at least they can get good quotes to help them on their way. a work colleague tried it for his 21 year old son ang went from £1,600 a year down to £695!!!!!!
    remember coverbox.co.uk
  • A couple of points regarding this guide.

1)Ive used the comparisons sites to find a good quote then gone through a cashback site ie 'Topcashback' and found the same insurer quote significanlty higher, totally defeating the object.

2)If you go through a comparison site sometimes the insurer seems to save your quote ( you can choose to also).

Sites such as TCB say in their notes for car insurance that cashback will not be paid on saved quotes, defeating the object again.

So, you either get the saved quote but no cashback or a considerably higher quote with cashback, not a lot of good.

You're right in what you say. To get around this problem you can give a slightly different name/address and use another email address until you think youve gotten the best deal.
