In the past when ever i've been asked by insurance companies what my car is worth i've always told them the amount that i think i could realisticly sell it for (what its worth? or so i thought)

If i was to sell my car i would be able to get around £1200-1300, which is what i would say 'it's worth', HOWEVER, recently after putting my reg number into a price comparison website it automatically came up with a value of just £700. (My car has low milege, fsh and is in v good condition so is worth more than average)

So my question is, if i tell them it's worth say £1250, take out their policy and then i write it off, what will they pay? The amount i told them or 'their' valuation.

Also, am i paying a higher premium than i should because i'm telling them it's true value instead of their lower valuation? and if so, how many other people are doing this?

im interested in this aswell i put down a value for my car when i done a check parkers said it was worth much less

i assume im paying more as a premium because of it?

The insurers will only pay out what they consider to be the market value of the car. It is obviously in their interests to pay out as little as possible, so you might have to argue strongly (with proof) if your car could be worth more.

The only exception to this is with a policy which includes an "agreed valuation", but this is only done for high value cars, or classics, whose market value is highly dependent on condition.

My insurance renewal is due soon and I did an online inquiry with my current insurer. Their renewal figure £310 was c £90 more than the online quote, and I'd be due a further 5 per cent off too.

Silly question, but is it "safe" to apply as a new customer and not renew existing policy?

I did that with Endsleigh a few months ago and it worked out fine.

    Insurance is up for renewal.

I have always gone for fully comp in the past...but car is valued at only £1190.
I could go with an option of fully comp with various excesses ranging from £50 upwards. But given the fact that that even any small accident repair is never less than £300 is it worth going FC?

If I do go 3rd party I assume there is no point in having protected no claims!

    Another question:

If I decide to go 3rd party fire/theft I know I am NOT covered to drive any other car..............BUT I am a named driver on my mums insurance to drive HER car. Would I still be covered?

    Thanks.

If you have protected NCB then your NCB is protected should there be a claim on the policy (ie. your NCB is protected should anyone claim against you as well as you making your own claim.)

Your being a named driver on another policy is irrespective of you having any other insurance (or none).

Just renewed my car insurance with swiftcover due to their price of £271, i couldn't believe the price on the 3 price comparison sites I used, and as for directline with their price of over £640, with the compare sites being £450+, all this with 5 years no claims, fully comp, ok the car is a bit much, a ford escort 1.8L GTI, but my milage is low per year only 2000 miles, i dont actually do 2000 miles more like 1200-1500miles, what with the cost of petrol, but the price of insurance at the moment is ridiculous, god help us all next year when VAT and other expenses have gone up.

one question, why after I used gocompare did the AA phone me up literally 5 minutes after i got their quote online and ask me if it was good, and will i be taking it out.

Maybe you slipped up and gave them your phone number. The convention is to use the number for street cars.
