Deceitful tactic Tesco has started is putting the "ANY 3 FOR £1.20" ln front of all its mints but on closer examination in small prints it states "selected chocolates" which are on another aisle entirely.
Anyone looking at it would assume its for the products its in front of and you only know when you check your bill youve been charged £2.10.

You're contradicting yourself. Your original post was complaining that Aldi was being misleading by comparing its own brands with major label brands, which I said, as that is all Aldi sells and the quality comparison held, was fair enough.

If you are now saying that you find Aldi's own label products inferior to Tesco's, then I think you are going to be in a very small minority of consumers. Judging from posters to this forum, most seem to feel that Aldi easily beats other own label brands, let alone big brands.

On the question of fruit and vegetables, as I said, Aldi has some ground to cover but I find myself buying more from Aldi these days and the quality has noticeably improved. To name just one example, fresh peas this summer have been a lot cheaper in Aldi and of perfectly good quality - likewise potatoes, bananas, strawberries, green vegetables, tomatoes and citrus fruit,

As for sell-by dates, nothing in either of the two Aldi stores I use hangs around long enough to go stale. More of a problem is the number of out of stock items.

What I particularly like about Aldi is that it sources so much of its range from the UK where quality control is pretty high. I couldn't say the same about Tesco whose processed food and meat (when I used to shop there) seemed to come from some very odd places. In that respect, Tesco has always struck me as the worst offender on the High St.

Its not contradictory at all. It matters not that, thats all aldi sell. If thats all they sell then do a comparison with other supermarkets own brands. They refuse to do this, I wonder why? Cos it doesnt fit their agenda.

All own brands can be a bit hit and miss. Some of Aldis are decent, some arent. Ditto with Tesco.
And actually blind taste tests on programmes like eat wrll for less rarely place Aldi at the the top (they generally end up in the middle somewhere)

If you're willing to take the word of a television pundit. then so be it. Personally, I prefer to rely on my own experience. Of course, all own brands are going to vary but unlike Tesco, Aldi has bet its future on the quality of its own brand products, which is probably why, with a few exceptions, they seem to me as good, or better, than the brands they are aiming to replicate. I certainly couldn't say the same for Tesco,
  • We pass both Tesco and Asda walking out without purchasing anything because they have become so expensive and also dropped so many lines.
Shopping mainly at Lidl or Aldi and local butchers we do well and live frugally on bargains but eat well.

Shopped at Morrison's this week cause I had 10% cashback on my Amex. Was shocked how expensive they are. Used to be my main supermarket but unless I have a 20% voucher for Waitrose or Tesco, I get most stuff from Aldi now.

For me, there's no question that the Big 4 are more expensive than Aldi & Lidl.

A few weeks ago, I also had a Morrisons voucher (2000 points when spending £20). It was hard work going round the store trying to find items that were reasonable value compared to A & L. There are one or two that were cheaper/better (saver peanut butter, ice cream on a £1 offer, soya milk). OTOH, there are whole departments (Dairy, Deli) that are way, way more expensive.

OTOH, I managed to double-up on offers at Sainsbury's at the weekend, and got a half-price shirt, posh coffee, posh bread, posh muesli bars and some tins of mixed beans (can't get elsewhere) for £9. I got a knowing look from the Cashier when the before-discount total came up just over £10, and I gave her a £1.50 off £10 spend voucher. :)

Strangely, I find Morrisons the best of the rest for my top-up shop of the things I can't find in Aldi. The worst, by a very long way, is Sainsbury's, though it's years since I've crossed an Asda threshold, I must confess, despite many saying they are the cheapest of the major supermarkets.

The sheer variety in a large Morrisons (or Sainsburys) is great compared to A & L. There's no Tesco here, so I don't know how they compare.

I think Asda are the cheapest of the Big 4, but not by that much.

The gap between Aldi/Lidi and the Big 4 is much larger than that between Asda and the rest, IMHO.

I recently tried Tesco again after a break of a couple of years and wasn't impressed (hence my earlier posts on this thread). It isn't just about Tesco's prices, either. I lost my trust in the company some years ago and now always have that lurking sense that they are trying to put one over on me. Once lost, trust is hard for a retailer to regain.

Well, for my shop, all I can say is that Tesco is certainly more expensive than Aldi (there's no nearby Lidl) and rarely offers comparable quality. Sadly, Aldi doesn't sell everything I want otherwise I would be saving even more money by shopping there!

We find the quality of meat from Morrisons is better than the other supermarkets (apart from the really expensive Waitrose "hung" steaks), but we use a combination of Asda, Lidl and then "International" shops for fruit and veg.
