We gave up shopping at our local large Tesco because we got so fed up having to negotiate around all the staff and trollies assembling online orders - it got to the point where it was almost impossible to get to half of the shelves.

In fairness this seems to be happening everywhere. I was doing a top-up shop in a branch of Sainsbury's yesterday and it was really quite difficult to navigate around the trolleys, let alone that special feature of Sainsburys - staff standing around chatting with one another.

Unfortunately, my local Aldi is even worse. The staff work like demons, not much chattering going on, but the shop is too small for the trade it does so thy shelves are constantly being restocked and the aisles are blocked as a consequence. Add the number of shoppers with double digit IQs. blocking access to the products with their trolleys while they ruminate over what to buy and it can be a frustrating place to shop.

I'm not sure what the answer would be but I wish someone would come up with one.

You know full well the answer to this minor inconvenience is automation, but that would cause a load of new problems :o

I like Aldi just the way it is :T

These Tesco brands have been specifically created to challenge Aldi and Lidl.

Personally, I can't really see the point of getting Tesco's copy of Aldi & Lidl, when you can just as easily access the real thing. But we don't have a Tesco, so it's kind of academic.

I'm sure that's true and I agree - what is the point of Tesco trying to replicate what Aldi and Lidl do so well?

Perhaps more to the point, personally, is that I simply don't trust Tesco. Even ignoring its dodgy deals, the quality of its own label products has always, to my mind, seemed inferior (yes, I'm one of those sad people who reads the ingredients list).

Aldi on the other hand does really quite well on that score. Many, if not most, of its products seem to be made in the UK from local ingredients (Tesco please note) and the quality is always at the top end.

Tesco lost my trust years ago and that is not going to be easy to win back.

Automation would not, however, solve the problem of bovine customers - including those who, having stared at the pork chops for half an hour, only remember they actually have to pay for their shopping after they have carefully packed the bags in their trolleys.

Cue the lengthy unzipping of handbags, fishing for purses among the detritus, deciding which card to use, or (worse) to pay with coins...

Before the shelf stacking robots are installed, electric cattle prods at the checkouts might be an idea.

Do you remember when they first opened ? The till operator had to memorise every item in the store and you were at the mercy of their memory if you got charged wrong or right,I remember at the time lots and lots of people with calculators going round adding every item they put in the trolley and if it was 3p out at the till everything had to be rechecked.

Did they not have those price label "guns" that we had pre-barcodes??

I got pretty nifty with one of those back in the day!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

May I suggest an online shopping operation may suit your needs - but perhaps not your budget - better.

That comes with its own set of problems.
  • I bought 9 toilet rolls for £2.79 in Lidl today. Not luxury line, just 2 ply super soft or something.

Aldi has similar at same price: https://www.aldi.co.uk/luxury-toilet-tissue-9-pack/p/063017006479600

Tesco own brand "Spring Force" £2.10 for 9 rolls

Also got 3 cartons of Apple Juice for 40p at Tesco which is clearly matching this

I appreciate that it's possible to find items in Tesco (or other shops) that will beat Aldi on price. For non perishables I'm happy to make a trip there when the price is good enough.

But if you compared a basket of shopping for the week (as Aldi often do in their adverts) then I think Aldi would be better value for money and cheaper.
