Tesco sells leeks that are double the price that ASDA sell at.

I can't comment on Aldi as the one near me beside the Tesco superstore is so full of people I won't go back. Hashtag stress central.

Tesco has a long way to go on prices. ASDA seems to have matched discount supermarket more on price.

I think customers cherry pick if we have the time but a large trolley full seems to include (from what I can see in the advert) a decent size shop.

Strangely enough our city centre store has lots of self service check outs but that's maybe because they don't anticipate people doing a full shop there.

Both aldi and aldi have the same adverts, it's not based on like for like. Could be named brand at tesco.

I don't really shop at asda except my wine you can only get there!

Fruit and veg need taken out of plastic, I find them excellent value and qualiry

I have noticed that Tesco’s “Growers Harvest “ range seems to price match Aldi’s Sweet Harvest ; Everyday Essentials & Rio Doro range :

These items are the same price in both shops:

    Tinned chopped tomatoes 400g 28p
    Tinned plum tomatoes 400g 28p
    Tinned Kidney Beans 400g 35p
    Passata 500g 32p
    Tinned New potatoes 567g 39p
    Frozen Garden peas 900g 62p
    Orange Juice Smooth 1L 55p
    Apple Juice 1L 55p

I bought Sweet Harvest tomatoes today. They are now 35p.

220 sheets at Lidl vs 200 (Tesco). Your 69p buys you another 180 sheets, the equivalent of nearly another toilet roll. Lidl's bog standard TP is just 2.09 for 9 rolls (again, 220 per sheet), so 1p less for another 180 sheets.

I go to poundstretcher and get 2 packs of 18 rolls for a £5 and its a good quality as basic toilet rolls anywhere else. If I buy triple ply etc the kids just bung up the toilet anyway lol.

I would be interested to see if these are the same "quality" as Tescos basic/value range. For example the value tinned toms were awful flavourless and watery, but I find Lidl and Aldi toms to be great or I get a better brand on offer at a discount store for around the 25p-30p mark.

    Exactly.

Tesco have been sending me quite a few £3 or £4 off a £30 shop, & £2 or £3 off a £20 shop coupons trying to tempt me back. Even with the equivalent of 10% off I struggled to find enough to make up the total. The had some wipes (of a satisfactory quality) for 60p that I used as 'fillers' to get me over the £30. They're 55p at Aldi. Went back to Tesco the following week and they're up to 70p. Needless to say Tesco got no further custom from me.

Unless they can match Aldi for price and quality, there really is no comparison.

The Tesco Extra I go to - is a very large shop, if I had had conditional spend vouchers to use there, I wouldn't find it difficult to use them, while ignoring the food & grocery depts., i.e. Depts. not in Aldi, (apart from yellow ticket items - which somehow Aldi/Lidl avoid).
While conversely, when the Mail had a £5 off voucher when you spend £25.00 in Lidl - I found it very hard going.
I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard

I don't think they'll succeed though. Lidl are currently running an advertising campaign showing comparative prices for a trolley of shopping including some branded items. As you'd expect Lidl win hands down.

I shop in Aldi with (ever decreasing) visits to Sainsburys for the few items I need that Aldi don't stock. I visit Lidl just occasionally as my nearest one is in a horrible location for traffic. When another branch opens closer to home in the next few months I'll be comparing them.

Those adverts are very selective usually showing their own brand products v branded products at the big supermarkets.

Like for like there isnt actually that much difference. The basics like milk & eggs are pretty much same price. The discounters are a bit cheaper but nowhere near what they claim.

And anyway I have a corporate gift card with Tesco which gives me 5% cashback plus i can accumalate free club card points via their current account with a bit of cash recycling. For me, this makes Tesco work out a fair bit cheaper.

    .

That doesn't bear any resemblance to my experience of comparing the two.

As Aldi doesn't sell many big brand products you can only compare its own brand offerings with the major brands and I find them to be of very comparable quality, as opposed to the own brand lines sold by the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury, which frequently disappoint.

Moreover, its far superior quality meat is cheaper, and its fruit and vegetables ditto. I will admit that quality of the latter two can be variable but it has been better lately.

No. You cant only compare Aldi's own brands to big brands. You compare them to other own brands. In my experience Aldi is very hit & miss.
A few weeks ago I bought some bread buns from Aldi, and on 2 consecutive occasions the last bun went mouldy a day before the used by date. This has never happened with Tesco buns. In fact theyre usually still good to eat a day after the used by date.

Their fruit & veg are actually very poor. Whenever ive gone in (mainly evening after work) much of it is so rotten it shouldnt even be on the shelf. They were actually reported on by BBC watchdog on this a while back.

Cooked meats - i went in for sandwich meat once for work. Was in a hurry & didnt check date. I noticed a few days later i had been eating meat 3 days past its date.

The quality & control over stock in Aldi is appauling really.

You're contradicting yourself. Your original post was complaining that Aldi was being misleading by comparing its own brands with major label brands, which I said, as that is all Aldi sells and the quality comparison held, was fair enough.

If you are now saying that you find Aldi's own label products inferior to Tesco's, then I think you are going to be in a very small minority of consumers. Judging from posters to this forum, most seem to feel that Aldi easily beats other own label brands, let alone big brands.

On the question of fruit and vegetables, as I said, Aldi has some ground to cover but I find myself buying more from Aldi these days and the quality has noticeably improved. To name just one example, fresh peas this summer have been a lot cheaper in Aldi and of perfectly good quality - likewise potatoes, bananas, strawberries, green vegetables, tomatoes and citrus fruit,

As for sell-by dates, nothing in either of the two Aldi stores I use hangs around long enough to go stale. More of a problem is the number of out of stock items.

What I particularly like about Aldi is that it sources so much of its range from the UK where quality control is pretty high. I couldn't say the same about Tesco whose processed food and meat (when I used to shop there) seemed to come from some very odd places. In that respect, Tesco has always struck me as the worst offender on the High St.
