  • Great posts this morning on your diary, all optimism and making goals for the future. To add to the discussion about kids, I taught my daughter to budget from the age of 7. I gave her a small amount of pocket money and she had to save, give and spend from that. Gradually I increased it until she was 12 when I gave her the child benefit and she had to buy everything from that. Obviously I bought her food and school clothes. She grew up to be great with money and bought her own place when she was 23 and has never had any debt. It is the best thing you can do to teach your kids the value of money. Moguline, you are so right when you say that a toy they urgently want/need/cant live without only brings them fleeting pleasure and then is forgotten. It's great that both of your children are young and can be taught the true value of things because you have learned that yourselves. It is great to read both your diaries.
  • Amazing update. :T:T

I've bought this book for my smalls:

    https://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=1030537&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_t7O86ie5QIVmLPtCh0lCg9LEAQYASABEgIDj_D_BwE

Obviously through CB when there was a free delivery deal on :rotfl:

It talks about saving but also wider topics such as foreign currencies and mortgages etc.. thought it was a great start.

Here's to that last 1 biting the dust.

Wow, congrats on the debt, I bet it’s feels like a massive relief to only have one creditor to concentrate on, won’t be long before debt turns into savings xx

Thank you! I think this one will be the hardest to be honest! Just going to try and keep the focus and the momentum going, hard though with Christmas coming up!

    I hope you are well!

It's hard to keep the momentum going but you just have to keep fighting. You've done MASSES over the past two months or so, so this might be the hard part when you don't have the small(er) wins (that's where I am at the moment).

Start planing in advance what you will eat when you are heading towards payday each month so that you don't have to have hoops on toast every day :rotfl: I made a daal from Jack Monroe's Cooking on a Bootstrap cookbook and there were a few portions which I froze. I feel like I've been eating it all week trying to run down the freezer (it's very nice).

  • Big massive well done to you you have achieved so much in so little time.

I personally think the change in mindset its the hardest to conquer ( I am still working / fighting mine) as well as paying off the debt I feel you need to fight both at the same time so I take my hat off to you, you are brilliant.

Your debt will be gone in no time, you got this, keep going.

    Best wishes

  • I think it is a good idea to teach even small children about the value of money and the benefits of saving from a young age. Sadly many towns, mine included does not have many if any building societies or banks any more and my children used to like going into the local branch to pay half their pocket money every week into their savings account. Barclays and Halifax even used to do a piggy bank so they could put their coins in that and watch it grow so it was there for something big. They used to like getting some money out at Christmas to choose Christmas presents for their friends and family members with our guidance of course. Nothing teaches children more about the value of money and budgeting than having to save up for something and wait to buy it as of course they do not have access to credit.

The next best thing is to get them to take on a weekend/evening/holiday job at 16 so they know how hard they have to work to earn £4 per hour or whatever minimum wage is now for under 18s.

  • Hey All,

So not much to report on the money front. All DD have gone out for the month, so now its just about staying within budget and shaving off where i can to add extra over payments to the credit card. I do have about £20 worth of expenses due, which will be paid at the end of the month. That will go straight over to the credit card.

I had a NSD yesterday, but on Tuesday i started my Christmas shopping. Ive drawn up a spreadsheet with an allocated budget to every person, and ive already saved £27 on the allocated budget spend! Anything i can save from this ear marked money will go straight into over paying the credit card too.

Oh other news in my life, The job interview went well, i got some great feedback and have been invited for a second interview! Im just waiting for the dates to be sent over. Im out of annual holiday, so will have to do some sneaking about which i actually hate, but hopefully it will be worth it!

This weekend will be pretty low spend, my son has a big football game on Saturday then he his going to his dads. I have then got a late lunch date, the guy (from what i know so far) sounds really nice, so im actually looking forward to this one! I just need to remember to be myself and be confident. Its silly in my every day life I am really confident and self assured, but around men i like i seem to turn into the most awkward thing haha.

Anyway, enough rambling from me! Have a lovely day all xx
