Can anyone suggest anything that this actually achieves ?
I am not sure what you are asking but I'll try.....the fact that you cannot enter a landline number in the mobile phone field achieves.......drum rolls.....more drum rolls........that you cannot enter a landline number in the mobile phone field, and thus Santander won't be attempting to send text messages to numbers which might not be capable of receiving text messages.

Well if that wasn't what you meant what did you mean in Post 233
I asked why, if it is not acceptable to you that a mobile was needed to receive Santander OTPs, you did take out a Santander current account in the first place? And also how you did you manage your account without OTPs?

My post wasnt about me ..it was just a general comment to anyone .. I have had a mobile for years way back to when I banked with AbbeyNational before Santander took over so had one before Santander used OTPs

Does that make things clearer .

The same questions would apply to any Santander customer who is now upset about needing a mobile for the OTPs.

Clearly some people think that is a major achievement, however I see that someone sending text messages to the switched-off phone in the glove box of my car is pretty idiotic, particularly when there is a sensible alternative available.
  • For those who want to get a mobile phone to receive text message as part of Strong Customer Authentication.

Here is an example where you could get it for £10.

For This you already get £10 credit on the simcard ready to use.
So the Handset itself is literally free.

This is a new Handset, so the battery must still be good in holding charge.
  • Nationwide will soon be forcing me to use the card reader instead of memorable data to log into my account. Although a bit inconvenient I have no real problem with that. However, it seems (I am still checking) that to purchase anything online with my credit card, I will have to use my mobile.

The problem is that I live in a village (not that remote but in a valley) which cannot get a mobile signal so that option is unavailable. (Before you ask, I use a PAYG phone so I can't get wifi-calling and it's no point getting a monthly contract for 1 or 2 calls a month).

My thinking is, if a card reader is considered secure enough to log into my bank with all the access that gives me, why can't the card reader be used to confirm an online purchase?

    From Nationwide website:
If you’re a Debit Card holder, we’re also making changes so you can authenticate online shopping transactions using a card reader, the same as is used on the Internet Bank. This option may be suitable if you don’t have a mobile phone or struggle to receive a mobile signal.

I presume you didn’t bother checking what Nationwide say about the process before posting?
