The feeling of "is it safe to lave the house" is increasing for many, I am sure.  My view is that we will aim to get some fresh air daily, and avoid being near other humans (big empty park next to our house to go hike around).

I haven't been in a big store since this kicked off.     We've started getting a veggie box, and picked up bread/milk & a few other bits from our local stores, who seem okay.   Walk back, avoid touching face, in and wash hands.   I do plan to try to use those local stores more in the future....although I may have a trip to Costco in the next couple of weeks for some items.

Seashell, not sure about your local pharmacy, but ours has a strict policy on people in, all well separated - I would have no hesitation to get stuff there (& indeed, did for a pal who had returned from hols and was 'self isolating' early on)
Curiously we have ended up buying 2 packs of ice-cream and 2 bottles of squash BECAUSE they were on deals - clearly not an essential need, but an offer is an offer!

Actually the news about Boris going to intensive care shook me up more than I expected.
Don't know why - just the possibility of a void at the top felt bad to me.   I'm not a massive fan of him, although I do feel he has an active brain which isn't always the case with politicians, and I personally feel they have done broadly the right things along the way (perhaps a bit slower than I would have liked).   I very much appreciate others have different views, & don't want to turn this political.....but I am glad to read he is not on a ventilator (as I would if it had been Starmer or Sturgeon).

    Stay healthy!
I'm glad we no longer shop in one of the big supermarkets.  Aldi is usually very quiet, and DH said it was extra quiet yesterday (only about 10 customers in the whole shop)  He even got a bag of pasta!!!  So we'll be having a pasta, tuna, olive and beetroot salad for a lunch too.

As for our pharmacy, it serves the village (and the surrounding housing estate), so it's only a small independent one, which I would feel safe using, if I had too.   It just seemed a bit of a unnecessary trip for "just" HF tablets (which I'd bet would be more expensive than Aldi's 79p for 14.)

It's like puzzle books.   I love doing these over the summer, but the ones I have are only available in big shops/newsagents etc. or by subscription.  I don't get through them quick enough to warrant a sub, but again feel I shouldn't make a special trip "just" to buy them.

And yes, the news about Boris shook us up too.   We need a government firing on all cylinders now, more than ever!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Me too. Bad for the country, terrible for his family. I have complete faith that he will recover. though He's a tough cookie.

To add to my anxiety, yesterday I heard the first reports of local Covid deaths. Three husbands, fathers, grandfathers.

Counting our blessings that OH's 30-something niece suffered mildly and has made a complete recovery. She is based in a much worse affected area than our's. We have a garden overlooking fields, local shops that will deliver, and the elderly parents are so far in lockdown that the danged virus will have to crawl twenty metres to reach them.

Our totally screwed retirement plans seem very unimportant and I haven't even squinted at the portfolio for over a week.

    Stay safe all.
We've had deaths at our hospital, but I have no idea whereabouts in the county they were from.   I've not heard anything on the village grapevine about anyone yet, so fingers crossed.

Touch wood, i've not personally been touched by any of my family, friends or neighbours being ill yet, so i've got everything crossed that it stays that way.

As for retirement.    I've also had my "angry" moments.   I want to scream "THIS WAS GOING TO BE OUR YEAR!!" and throw my toys out of the pram.    Our full first year of retirement, with all our plans of getting out and about, lots of little trips here and there.   Good job we hadn't bought our National trust membership yet!!     Anyway, i need to "suck it up buttercup!!"

As it turns out, none of those plans involved going anywhere over the kids Easter holidays anyway....so it's business in a way at the moment.

    Take care.

  • Spoke to my neighbour (at a safe distance) the other day whilst taking the dog for our walk. He told me his daughter who works at Lidl noticed that the beer and wine aisle in her store was totally depleted apart from one product line which no-one had bought. Curious to see what had been left untouched she had a look. It was "Corona beer" !
    People are weird.
    Stay safe folks.

As for supermarket costs, my Tesco spending is way up- with all the special offers and mutli buys reduced or stopped.

But that is more than made up for by the fact i havent made it into M&S in 3 weeks as the lines have been too long.  So overall spending same or a little less.  Going to attempt M&S again tomorrow, wish me luck.
Well I have been waiting for the 25% off wine at Tesco.  Was predicted to start today.  No idea if it has or will.

If anyone is in Tesco in the coming days/weeks - can you post on here if the offer starts.

Quick Google. Population of UK is 66.65 million (2019). UK Coronovarius deaths is 6159. One death per 10822 of the population. Less than 1 in 10,000. Get a piece of paper and put 10822 small circles on it. Colour one in in red. Not many at all so far.

We have quite a few people poorly on our street of 140 houses, including 2 pensioners who are certain they have COVID. Their son has been living with them as their carer but he was taken to hospital by ambulance Monday night with breathing difficulties. Paramedic checked the couple over while there are said they were better off at home while they could manage. Their son is now home as hospital couldn't see any COVID indicators on his x-ray - he has steroids, antibiotics and a blue inhaler to address his symptoms so fingers crossed. All quite scary.
Another neighbour's daughter is home from uni - final year medicine so she may start working at the hospital soon even though she isn't officially qualified. We have offered her the camper van on our drive if she has to self isolate when she starts.
Meanwhile we are working from home quite the same as usual and walking the dogs round campus while it is quiet.

    Southend United football club.
Never heard of Southend United. It would be unlucky for them to lose all their supporters at the same time.

Imagine going to watch Spurs play a game at home. There's a silent assassin in the crowd that's randomly selecting every 10th person as their target.

There'd still be a good crowd though at the end of the match.
