Am I the only person who is planning to teach my kids to drive rather than pay for someone else to do it? It's not exactly rocket science!
It's just simple maths. For most people it works out cheaper to pay for an instructor than to pay to add a 17 year old learner driver onto your insurance.0 -

My daughter had some lessons and then we started to go out with her to practice - the first outing for me reduced my lifespan by a good 10 years as she got way too close to our camper van. It was terrifying. I let OH did the next few weeks. In the run up to her test I went out every day with her to practice and she passed without even a minor.
The test is different theses days - they are expected to know different things and I think that an instructor plus dual controls will start them off in the right way. There will always need to be practice - whether just in lessons or in a private car.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

I'll have to look at the insurance question. We've already got the theory book and they should be able to knock that off with ease. We'll have to see how they get on with the concept of being taught by Mom and/or Dad though. Mom is clearly good at it as she taught me to drive! I passed my test first time and we got married exactly a year later.0

In my experience insurance for adding a teenager as a learner to an existing policy wasn't too bad. It's after they pass their test and/or want their own car that it gets expensive.0

We paid about 50 quid a month for learner insurance. Now she has passed it was just under £900 for the year with a black box - I was expecting a lot worse as it is an expensive postcode (for insurance).I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Feels like a minor thread derail...but yes, Collingwood and Marmalade had good insurance options when ours were learning...
....but once they pass, the cost can be astronomical!
Our first one's was around £1400 (& the next best quote we had was a grand more!)
Second was added to the first for a year, then with her own car the insurance was under a grand....
Now they are a couple of years in with no claims, they are around the £500 mark. Still pretty painful, but oh, the freedom!
Meanwhile, back in those squirrelled nuts.....:rotfl:Plan for tomorrow, enjoy today!0 -

My dad gave me my first few lessons, just stuck some L plates on and away we went,do not know if he informed his insurance company, mind there were a lot less cars on the roads then as we are talking 1967:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0
