  • My £49 Sky+ Box is brand new and comes with a full 12 month warranty, if it breaks down they swap it, the £65 charge from sky is usually the standard price for an engineer to fit a replacement box if your existing box is out of warranty, but just threaten to leave sky if it is out of warranty, as rather than lose you they will replace it.
If Sky's a better deal go for it the choice is yours ;)

    Hi

Looking for some advice - not sure if this is the right place.

I have just called Telewest to give them notice as I want to move to sky, told them the truth saying I wanted sky plus and miss sky one etc. They told me that unlike them Sky charge if their is a fault with one of their services which could be upto £65! Also if my sky + box stops working I have to pay for a new one, where as Telewest would replace free of charge. Is this true, or are they trying to stop me going to sky by telling me fibs?

It's true, the flip side of the coin is that with Sky, you buy the box and it is yours to keep (but you do have to pay repair costs); with VM, they pay all the maintenance costs but if you cancel, the box belongs to them and they come and take it away.

I just cancelled with Virgin Media and they asked me to take the box to my local recycling depot, they didnt want it back?

I guess Ill go with the sky + with a 12 month warranty, and then threaten to leave if it doesnt work after.

The equivilanet to sky + with Virgin Media is a £5 charge a month, so I guess it outweighs it.

  • I was after Sky plus for free, sent a few emails out to Sky, one of them even to someone called James MURDOCH lol I have had a reply offering me £49 with free installation... tried to phone Sky up to take them up on the offer but the sales team cannot do that deal for me, only the department that sent me the email. So am waiting for a reply from the email department, I have asked them to phone me, still gonna try for the totally free deal, but am pretty happy with £49... will keep you posted

I phoned the number in the OP. Told them that I was a customer of 6 yrs, was paying too much for movie channels I don't watch and wanted to cancel. I mentioned that with Virgin I can get most of the same channels including Sports pack for similar money, AND virgin throw in a V+ box which works like sky plus.
I also mentioned that between Barclays direct debit fiasco and Sky my direct debit had been cancelled and i was pretty frustrated with rubbish sky service.

Nice man in cancelation offered me Sky +, free installation, reduced my package price by taking off movies, even offered to move the old box to an other room if I wanted free of charge. I said I wasn't going to pay extra for multiroom, so he said that the Sky box could like a freeview box and bring in all the freeview channels which I could upgrade later if I wanted to multiroom.

Installation date for Sky + it wednesday next week.
    Result. Thanks OP.

Could have had a free box if I had so wished but when I asked what the difference was, they said the free ones are classed as Grade A boxes, which means they have been refurbished.
The woman I spoke to told me my free Sky+ box would be brand new
