A friend has just given me a Sky Plus box with 2 controllers. Is it possible to install myself so i can have Sky Plus without any money outlay? If so would it be very difficult to do?

Alternatively, if i told Sky I have a box could I pay an installation fee only for them to set up for me?

    Thanks

Promise of box not materialised-please ignore

heskpesk - I don't think it's just the installation that's the thing. I'm sure a lot of people could physically wire up for Sky+. But the box won't work without the blue card, which is what you pay for.

Anyway, nice sky man has just left, having fitted my Sky+. Just waiting for the box to do its stuff and then I can have a play with it. However, slightly worryingly, about 15 mins before he arrived, I opened a letter from sky telling me thanks for signing up to sky+, it was going to cost me £184  However, nice lady on phone told me my installation was free, those letters are automatically generated, so just ignore it. (I have kept call details in case I need to query this later)

I bought a sky box at a charity shop for £25 and installed at our new house (which had a dish) and we receive all the free channels, we don't subscribe to sky.

That won't work on Sky+ though.

hi, I have been Sky Digital customer for 9 years. Thought i would push my luck and try get Sky + for free. Called Sky (very politely) to cancel Sky Digital (reason - work split shifts - I lied!), the lovely lady (who is just back from her hols) offered me Sky+ for £49, i said i couldn't afford it she put me on hold then offered me Sky+ for free, getting installed on Friday. I called Sky @ Livingston 08081014438. It certainly pays been polite & chatty to these people.

I was very calm and chatty. Why would I be otherwise?

Success. My Dad's now getting Sky+ installed for free.

Tried 0808 1014438, and got a message saying the number is closed, call 08442 414141. Phoned 01506 421712 instead. Spoke to Asian call centre first, who then put me through to Glasgow (he was a weegie anyway). Call took 30 minutes.

My Dad's been with Sky for just over a year, on 6 mixes + Sports + broadband ~ £40 p/m.

Pretended to be my Dad and said for the money I was paying, I was missing too many programs to make it worthwhile. Want to cancel and put the money towards a Freeview or FreeSat PVR.

Put on hold for a minute while the manager was consulted (aye right). Offered Sky+ plus install for free. Another 12 month contract though - is that the same for everyone?

Thoroughly delighted. Shame I couldn't do it for myself (only had Sky for 2 months).
