I cancelled my Sky last Jan (after getting a new box out of them first by threatening to cancel, then cancelling a month later).
I've had quite a few calls and postal offers to re-join and refused them all. Last week they posted an offer of free SKY+ till the end of June on any of the plans they offer.
Slightly tempted now. It seems if you are already with them, they treat you with contempt until you actually demand they cancel you. Then they jump through hoops to keep you on board.0 -
I got free sky+ on Sunday :j :j
Last week I heard that FREESAT were bringing out a recordable box and rang to cancel my sky. When they asked why, I said I was going to get the new recordable FREESAT box when it comes out in July.
They asked if I had considered Sky+ and I said "Why would I pay over £100 for Sky+". I was then offered Sky+ for £49. So I said "Why would I pay £49 for Sky+, when as a new customer I could get if FREE!".
The guy then said "No you can't". I said "Yes you can, they were in my local shopping centre and they said, if I was a new customer it would be free".
The guy asked me to hold and then came back. Guess what, Today they had a special deal and I could have Sky+ for free if I bought two more mixes costing me £2 more. No installation costs and a free box.
OK - Done Deal
They are coming on the 1st July :T :TI want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -
Just wanted to add to the thread, and thanks everyone else who posted their experiences on here!
I have has the error message "no satellite signal being received" on my old regular digital box for the last week, the help line wanted to send out an engineer at the cost of £65 to replace the box and dish with like for like.
I tried the sales line a couple of times to upgrade to sky plus and got very annoyed at their treatment of me (a customer for 12 years!) Totally unwilling to give me a deal other than the £99 plus install at £60 quoted on the website. Don’t both with them!
I knew of people getting sky plus for free etc... but after reading this thread decided to try ringing the cancellation line on 01506421825. after pressing many options I got to a human, who then after is explained I wanted to cancel proceeded to put me on hold to get me in the queue for the “right” department, they then came back to tell me the queue was 10 mins! After 9mins 50secs of hold adverts I got another human! who once I told them I wanted to cancel they wanted to know why, I said we weren't getting good use of sky, missing lots of programmes we want to watch and were also having the problems with the box and signal. He mentioned sky plus, I said it was too expensive and we figure we best just cancel, he then put me on hold for about 2 mins while he "spoke with his manager". He came back with the £49 deal, at which I cut my losses and took the deal. I'm sure if I held out a bit longer he would have gone for the free deal but I’m very happy to pay £49 for it. They are coming Saturday to fit it!!!!!
Thanks to everyone on this site!!!!
p.s. he mentioned we were paying £5 a month for the Disney channel, which neither of the kids watch anymore. so we are also now going to save £5 a month! Sky Plus backed for in 10 months! sorted!!!!!0 -
I don't think there is any method to how they are doing this - and like others have said, it looks like Sky are now calling people's bluff, so there is a definite risk that they will take your cancellation request. I also agree with Wil2 that it seems that if you are on the top package they are less likely to offer a good deal - how odd... maybe they think we are suckers who have paid so much for this long so we're more likely to continue.
I was hoping to get free Sky Plus but no luck, got offered the £49 deal but they weren't budging on that at all - I have Sky broadband and the guy was giving me my MAC for transfer  - got a bit worried then and realised I had met my match that day. Anyway after more discussion, I did manage to get a deal I was fairly pleased with though. Got their unlimited phone package free for a year which saves £60 and is useful for me with the inclusive international numbers. Kept my line rental with BT and will cancel that in a year. Secondly, got my TV package reduced by £15 per month for 3 months (paying £30 until September) so will save £45 and still have all our channels (which we do watch). Will reassess in September.
So no free Sky Plus for me (my trusty VCR still has a job to do), but I'm ok with what I managed to get - thanks to prompting and advice from this site, I wouldn't have even bothered making the call without it. Anyway, I'll wait awhile and hopefully upgrade to HD for a decent price (yes, might take a few years) - good luck everyone, hope you get offered something reasonable.

I've just got off the phone to sky after 40 mins hard haggling. I eventually got up the nerve to ask to be put through to cancellations who were very helpful. I compared the £159 offered by the sales dept to the price of a tumble dryer to make my point and he quickly disappeared and came back with 2 offers. £49 no changes to my account. Free if I added a sports or movies pack (£10) which i was free to cancel after a month. I went for the latter. My monthly bill is £27 normally, that's 2 entertainment packages, broadband and sky talk line rental. So I'm not even a customer who spends a fortune with them.0

Hi all,
My story:
I rang up over a week ago to try and get a better deal on sky+ and they said no offers for me, the usual.
I stood tight and went into the cancellation period of 30 days! (I was prepared to switch it off, some people may not)
Today, over a week later i called up playing dumb! (I know it was supposed to be switched off on the 4th July) but i said i was in my cancellation period and had forgotten when i would be swithced off!. I had a very nice indian lady then ask why i had cancelled. When stating i missed most of the programmes i wanted to watch due to having a newborn and being tired out she asked about sky plus.
She already knew i had sent an email begging for it (must be logged on the system)
When saying i couldnt afford the set up fees could she just provide me with my cancellation date she promply came back and offered it for free!.
I am now getting sky+ insalled on Frday afternoon for free.
Thank you to the poster of this thread, Sky are just trying to call your bluff......Dont let them, they will back down.
I thought i had no chance they let me cancel my account but a week later they said they valued my custom. If you have an iron stomach go for it.
Leigh xxI will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!
Total £560 -
I have Sky HD and when I got it I gave my mum my old Sky+ which she liked but as it was a PVR2 it couldn't accept the anytime service. I had a late night search on eBay a few Saturdays ago and bid on a PVR3 with 3 remotes that was only 4 months old. I thought it was worth a bid of £50. Anyway I forgot all about it til on the Sunday morning I was emailed I'd won for a price of £30.50 plus £15 delivery. Me and mum were very happy and she has a bigger hard drive and anytime and we both have remotes so when I'm there we can fight on what we watch :rotfl:
Moral I suppose of my story is you can get a good deal and at least that's her birthday present sorted :rotfl:Always looking for a bargain and to help0 -
I have just cancelled and whilst they did ask if there was anything they could do for me, i stopped short of asking for Sky+ although i was asked if i had thought about it but i avoided saying much about it.
Now a 30 day cancellation has been applied. I was wondering if anyone else has cancelled and then had a phone call from them asking you to stay as i have heard in the past this has happened?0
