hi if you don't want to see cotton wool balls what about those clay rings that fit round light bulbs.
I really don't like plug ins they are synthetic fragrances and you use electricity and i always get a head ache if i go somewhere that uses them.
I do the bbq bamboo sticks in oil and water they work really well if they are on top of a shelf you don't notice them i got the reciepe from here http://tipnut.com/reed-diffusers/
I have an oil burner in the kitchen which deals with the cooking smells
As i make soap and other people come here to make it. i fill any empty essential oil bottles with a bit of water and hide them behind my radiators ( so they don't get tipped over) i l also hide them behind the shoe rack.

Firstly, a spray bottle with water, with a few drops of the essential oil of your choice.

Secondly, there is this recipe in "Thrifty Ways For Modern Days" for a home made air freshener gel. I put mine in used supermarket budget brand air freshener containers.

    AIR FRESHENER GEL

    Makes 500ml

    INGREDIENTS

500ml of distilled or de-ionised water
    1 packet of gelatine
Essential oil or fragrance of your choice

    METHOD

Put 250ml of the water into a saucepan on a medium heat. Bring almost to the boil, then turn down the heat to low.

Add the gelatine. Stir thoroughly, until it is dissolved.

Remove the pan from the heat. Add the remaining 250ml of water.

Add 10 to 20 drops of the oil or fragrance, a few drops at a time, until it is as smelly as you want.

Pour the mixture into clean containers.

    Leave them to cool overnight.

    ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES

There are vegetarian alternatives to gelatine, like agar, carrageen and pectin, and also products with names like Veg-E-Gel and VegeSet.

Add some food colouring of your choice, a few drops at a time, until it is the colour you want.

You can put it in the fridge overnight, if you need it to set more quickly, but it will make the fridge smell.

More ideas in our main thread here: Plug in Air Freshners

I'll add your thread to that one later to help keep the ideas together.

I found this online - I'm waiting for my plug in to finish then I'm going to try it with lavender oil and water.

please could anyone advise ? yesterday i brought airfreshner plug in's at a cost of £20 and this was the cheapest i could find of a certain type begins with ambi - ? :rotfl:this was just the oil not the whole plug in. is there a cheaper way say to use some sort of oils in them. i am sick of being ripped off with the prices of these things to make my house smell nice. anyone got any ideas please. will await your answers and then reply. thank you all in advance

have you tried the old pop a drop of cheap essential oil (or fave perfume/ aftershave) on the back of the radiator trick?
if you want it to last a little longer pop the oil/ perfume etc on a bit of old cloth and paperclip it behind the radiator... you can change the cloth/ scent when ever you like. :))

  • I emailed Purity Fragrance and they said this:

"Our refills liquids are fully tested with MSDS safety data sheets. They do not contain propellants and are based on a higher level of essential oil instead".

I have been using them for months and have been really happy with them, especially the cost compared to official refills.

followed one of the tips from Shandyclover's post above & used lemongrass essential oil & water in an old plug-in - starting to smell good :) would never have thought about washing the old wick!

Sorry Shandyclover, can't thank you as button isn't showing.

Be careful if you have cats though leaving bowls of water about with essential oils in as cats will drink from anything.
