The union has announced they are calling off the strike proposed for 27th September.

    Release date: 18/09/2019

The British Airline Pilots Association has today called off the next strike scheduled for 27th September in the dispute between British Airways and its pilots.

BALPA said the strikes on 9th and 10th September had demonstrated the anger and resolve of pilots. It was now time for a period of reflection before the dispute escalates further and irreparable damage is done to the brand.

BALPA hopes BA will now change its approach and negotiate seriously with a view to ending this dispute.

BALPA General Secretary, Brian Strutton, said:

“Someone has to take the initiative to sort out this dispute and with no sign of that from BA the pilots have decided to take the responsible course. In a genuine attempt at establishing a time out for common sense to prevail, we have lifted the threat of the strike on the 27th September.

“BA passengers rightly expect BA and its pilots to resolve their issues without disruption and now is the time for cool heads and pragmatism to be brought to bear. I hope BA and its owner IAG show as much responsibility as the pilots.”

Should BA refuse meaningful new negotiations, BALPA retains the right to announce further strike dates.

IMHO, I don't believe that it's anything, whatsoever, to do with the likes of, “Someone has to take the initiative to sort out this dispute and with no sign of that from BA the pilots have decided to take the responsible course" It's more that BALPA and their BA pilots now finally realise that the general public, on the whole, think that they are already paid more than enough, with their high salaries, pension fund & other benefits! :)

The losers here are BALPA and their BA pilots, who believed that they were hard done by. Also, there is, of course, the resulatant damage done to the BA brand, although, as before, in cases like this, IMHO, it'll be fairly short term.

However, I do believe that a lot of regular BA pax will now look very differently on their flight pilots from now on, compared to how they did before for decades! Those pilots have nobody else to blame in that but themselves!

Dont also believe that BALPA are the good guys by calling the strike off. BA decided to cancel flights for the 27th strike already, without trying to negotiation a deal. Then BALPA call off the strike which means BA have arranged alternative flights for people, but now have to run the original flight which most likely wont be full, so will cost them to pay the pilot/cabin crew to fly the plane and the flight will be run at a loss. By calling it off BALPA look the good guys to the general public, but this is just games they're playing to try and win the dispute.

BA look like they wont back down from this, and certainly can afford to ride any strike action out. Even with a few strike dates a month, BA are still making a profit.

Do they care what the public think? Northern Rail went on strike every Saturday for nearly a year. Very little public support but they still did it.

Regarding this strike, yes the pilots are paid well but they also gave up wages and benefits to help out BA when they were struggling, on the promise they would be rewarded when things changed. Seems BA didnt fulfill that promise
