Had a read of the first few posts it does sound awesome thanks ... is 2 weeks long enough to do it all? will need to check weather flight length etc ... but it does sound like somewhere we would enjoy :)

edited to add : it's quite a long flight, possibly better for a 3-4 week break ?

incidentally just saw Kerela is as well so would need to take that into consideration as well

We did two weeks and didn't feel over rushed so certainly possible although we like epic trips.

You could concentrate on doing just the North West.

Another good shout for February would be Madeira (certainly if you like walking) and/or the Canary Islands. The Canary's are often over-looked by "proper" tourists because of their holiday island status. However, the plane to pool crowd miss on on some the nicest landscapes within a 4 hour flight of the UK. We've just returned from La Palma which is lovely but all the islands offer something different. All should be warm enough in February and it's very easy to island hop to fill two weeks.

We have done two 2 week tours of India, one north, one south preferred the north but both are wonderful.
Have you thought of a cruise,TBH though I would go fly/cruise at that time of year,
Really that time of year apart from Egypt or the Canaries is going to be long haul for the best sun if that's what you want, (but maybe not if you are considering Edinburgh....)

Oman is beautiful and interesting, not a common tourist destination afaik. The people are very nice there too.

It seems to be developing for tourism: probably at the 'sweet spot' where the facilities are in place but locals are still interested in welcoming visitors and have not yet been jaded by hordes of tourists. Take a look at the website for Air Oman: they offer stopover packages for long-haul passengers and the attractions listed seem to be enough for two weeks if you wanted to do them all.

I think that Oman is about the limit of how far I would want to travel for just two weeks: India is a bit further, and when I went to India for two weeks I felt that too high a proportion of the trip was taken up by getting there and dealing with jet-lag (and simply catching up on sleep after the journey).

Another factor is that for most of the year the Gulf is unbearably hot, but it should be pleasant in February.

Last March we went to Venice and Milan, 3 nights in each and a train in between. So much to see and do and if you like food, what better than Italian. :)

Or there's Florence or Verona if you fancy Italy.

Other ideas are Vienna or Berlin or Salzburg.

These places would still be chilly in February...

Having said that, I have been to Italy for Christmas a couple of times: Rome was sunny and pleasant, while Florence and Siena were still enjoyable. Milan was mostly more pleasant indoors. If considering Italy, remember that Bergamo (the Ryanair airport for Milan) is an absolute gem.

Personally I'd go for a city break rather than a walking holiday at that time of the year then you'd have the option of museums and galleries, if wet, but could walk around on better days. There are heaps in Europe other than the couple you've mentioned so far.

Alternatively, if you want to push the boat out and have good weather in February you could go long haul. We had a brilliant trip to India in February and there were many in our group celebrating Big birthdays and anniversaries.

I think it's all about having the right clothes!:rotfl: If OP is happy to wrap up warm and go into galleries and museums when it's wet then Europe is fine. Otherwise plenty of ideas for warm places in February.
  • Mexico - loads of history, culture and wildlife. Though perhaps flights are too long? I'd consider a flight less than 12 hours fine for a 2-week break, especially if it was direct (though I did go to Stockholm on a day trip, so my view on acceptable travel time v time at destination may be a bit odd!).

thanks everyone, just finished work so will get a chance to read all messages when I get home, chatting with you all has certainly helped. Its helped me focus more on what we want.

I'm thinking long flights and jet lag will take up a lot of time for a fortnight ( which is why weve always done those breaks over a month,

That's fine. It's horses for courses with any holiday.

Until recently I had a week off every February so if I wanted to go away it was go for a week or not go at all. As well as European breaks I've been to the Caribbean, Hong Kong, New York and Bali. It was just great to have a break although I'd have liked a month. :D
