We did Kerala for three weeks almost twenty years ago. Its a huge state, but having three weeks gave us time to see the north of the state including Cochin and also tour to the southern tip of India in Tamil Nadu.
We did do a boat house overnight trip, scariest time of our life. Local fishermen weren't happy and boarded the boat in the middle of the night. We were in the middle of a lake and could do nothing but sit it out until the boat crew negotiated with them to leave.
It is possible to do a mini break to the Maldives from Kerala.0 -

yeah we did think Kerela, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, sadly we only have two weeks max, so may need to put that on the retirement list0 -
When I speak to people about the Caribean I just doesn't appeal to me, my friends tell me of how they cant leave their hotels as its unsafe, how there isn't many things to do.
I may be wrong ofcourse that's just what my friends tell me
That sounds like Jamaica, but other places are different.
I have visited Cuba and the Dominican Republic, each for two weeks. There was a great deal to see and do in both places and I never once felt in the slightest unsafe. In neither case had I booked a resort: in Cuba I bought a few days in a resort once I was there and in fact was really impressed by the beach and the coral. In both countries I enjoyed the sense of history, museums and beautiful old buildings: in Cuba there was also a lot of live music and dance.0 -
If you do go to Edinburgh remember that it's February so it's very unlikely to be in any way tropical! And on the weekend of the 8th it's the Calcutta Cup so there's a good chance that a lot of the accommodation will already be booked up.0

Egypt is not ridiculously far, and would have decent weather at that time of year. And Oman is a bit further: the city of Muscat is supposed to be ancient and interesting while the snorkelling there is outstanding. February would be just about the best time of year for Oman.0

I think your right I think it was Jamaica, I have heard a few say they enjoyed Cuba, I spose it's just not really been on my radar, maybe it should be .... thanks0 -
Yes, we stayed on houseboat overnight - one of the highlights. Never heard of experience like daveyjp's before, everyone very friendly whether on waterways, train journey or just out & about.0

the most ridiculous thing about Edinburgh being the only place that appealed to me ( although now thanks to people on here I'm now thinking of other places) is we live closeish to Edinburgh and go there maybe 6 times a year or so, so it makes no sense that we would want to go there for an anniversary break, every time we go we often say we will need to come and stay a few days as we find we only get a couple of hours to go exploring.

Thank you everyone for all the great ideas so many great places to choose from, most of which I really fancy of not next February then when we retire ( so that we can enjoy the places for longer)
