What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also accept that, sometimes, life just gets on top of us and we can't keep up, maybe because we're time-poor, not in the best of health and/or we have littlies who need us. We are definitely NOT control freaks aiming for perfection and utterly spotless show-homes.
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. You're more than welcome to join us in the everlasting battle against dust, grime and gibble. The aim of our thread is to make those onerous tasks less daunting, and to support each other - and to make time for the finer things in life!
Please do remember we have to abide by MSE rules; each post should, ideally, include some mention of flying.
Thank you Valli for last week's thread
Please follow the forum rules on this thread as Flylady has been here a LONG time and is a fabulous support and resource for lots of us. All posts should have some Flylady-related (ooh a compound adjective) content!
The idea is that even if you are really busy you don't need to fall off the wagon!very room comes back around next week so please don’t stress about catching up
These lists are only suggestions and not a must do list; you are more than welcome to post and follow your own lists.
Also adding a declutter mission each day will help to gradually clear the clutter and make flying easier.
A few of the basics before we start the week
Hotspots are areas where if one thing gets put there, loads of other things follow!
Daily routines are anything you need to do on a daily basis like washing, swish and swipe kitchen and bathroom, ironing, making beds, vacuuming high traffic areas, making meals etc.
Night-time routines are all things which make getting ready in the morning easier, preparing clothes for the next day, making lunches, swish & swipes of the kitchen and tidying the living room before you go to bed plus personals like shower/brush teeth etc.
Fling Boogie - stick on some loud music, grab a bin bag and whiz around the house finding items that can go out with the rubbish, recycling, for charity shop, basically anything that will stop it cluttering your home.
Swish and swipe/S&S means have a quick wipe over an area such as a sink or toilet to prevent the build up of dirt. This is usually done on a daily basis
HHE/HHC/HHI Half Hour exercise/challenge/ironing ... run around for 30 minutes to the Benny Hill music frantically cleaning exercising or ironing.. other music may be used if you prefer!
WM ~ Washing machine
TD ~ Tumble dryer
SC ~ Slowcooker
BM ~ Breadmaker
DW ~ Dishwasher
SOAADFA ~ Sit on 'bottom' and do 'nothing'
KH/XH/FW ~ Ex-husband and other not so polite versions
DH/DD/DS/DW/DP ~ Dear husband/daughter/son/wife/partner/whatever
OH/SO ~ Other half/significant other
NN ~ nice neighbour
Toxic (friend/mother/sister/whoever) ~ person in your life that seems to exist to make your life miserable
AF ~ Aunt Flo 'time of the month'.. nothing to do with flying but it comes up often.
ETA ~ Edited to add
Gibble ~ miscellaneous crap that appears forever homeless
Dot-to-dot ~ pick a small area (not a whole room) like a chair/coffee/table/shelf/worktop or wherever- thats your first 'dot' - totally clear it - clean it - and only put back what should be there - deal with what you have removed (not just move it somewhere else) then if you have time move on and do the same to another 'dot' -the idea is just like a dot to dot puzzle, you aim to join up all the dots and have a tidy room. The trick is to keep each dot tidy until you get them all joined up! All credit to AnW's Mum for this one
RoD ~ Room of Doom, the one room that feels like it is a permanent pit and cannot be used to its potential!
MAD half hour - Mad is the abbreviation for Make A Difference.
The idea is that you have a Forth bridge (ie never-ending - or just huge) task but that you work on it in half-hour bursts. This way you know you ARE stooping, and that you won't get it finished but you will make a difference - so it might be clearing out - the garage or shed, or clothes sorting, or weeding - you get the picture - but rather than keep going until you've lost the will to live you do half an hour...but, eventually those half hours will get the job done!

Thanks for the new thread, Natty.
Busy week coming up. And am going to a Leonardo exhibition with ma and Sis on Tuesday. So not sure how much flying I'll get in.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Thanks for threads.
House doesn't look too bad at the moment as I'm making a real effort to keep flying while Mr N is hospital visiting (a couple of hrs twice a day). Sometimes I go with him, it's his choice whether he wants the company/support or to come home to a clean house and hot meal. After a bit of a mental relapse on Fri (more lashing out, physically and verbally), MIL is calmer now. Unfortunately the physio wasn't able to get the walking programme into action as much as hoped before the weekend so we're hoping for progress this week.
Wild wind with some rain and hail here today, but sun in between so got one load of washing out (well Mr N did while I was at church then Lent lunch) then sorted out seeds and started sowing in the greenhouse.Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.0 -
thank ye for fred XX
Well, I have a somewhat busy week.
Parents evening Wednesday, Moomin appointment Thursday and DS3 appointment in Leeds on Friday.. all day jobby there... thinking of pootling to Ike@ for meatballs and trinkets and delights. DD1 and my sisters friend want Kallax units.. We need a Malm or 12.. and may need a child-collector too.
I need to finish painting the kitchen and Sort Twinkles chest of drawers.. Those are my important jobs this week. Oh.. and get my PPI cheque in bank and I promised the 3 teens £50 each when it clears.. so they can go shopping for clothes.. Moomin is VERY excited by the prospect. I need to get quotes for a shower and a downstairs toilet.. see if I can afford both .. I doubt I can, but.. we shall see!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Good morning
Thank you for the thread Natty, and Valli for last week.
I’m in. It’s a busy week that I haven’t been looking forward to, but I’ll be in as much as I can.
Have a lovely day everyone.0 -

Fingers crossed for you here MadamMim xx
Morning everyone
Thank you jojo xx I hadn't thought of the potential fire hazard. And you are right - neither of us will kick off our shoes at the back door then pick them up and take them up to a cupboard on the landing - just to have to go up and fetch them down again when we want to go out. Any shoe holding receptacle needs to be near the back door - I need a tape measureDitto coats.... back to the drawing board
Glad to hear that it's not just here that coats and shoes cause a problem
I'm back on the slinky plan - as from Saturday. (I resisted the temptation to pig out on messies all weekend and start the healthy eating today :T And now I'm feeling all virtuous :A lol )
And yesterday I went to church  I always say that the last vicar 'cured' me of churchbut I received a text out of the blue from an old friend saying 'we're going to see what this new service in the village church is like, do you fancy it?' This was at 2.45 pm and the service started at 3!!! So I went in my 'more than meets the eye' minions t shirt and jeans as that's what I happened to be wearing as I flung on my boots (handy having them by the back door where I'd just kicked them off
) and went. I don't usually 'do' spontaneous - so we were all surprised :rotfl:
Paid stuff today. I've picked up two books off the pile in my bedroom - both basically called ' how to dejunk your life'. They will be perused in my lunch break(s) and one will go in the cs as I don't need two.
Have a good day ladies xx Thinking of you all.

Morning all
In bed with a :coffee:.
Not looking forward to going out today - sounds blowy.

Morning
One load of washing in, tea in slow cooker, bathroom and kitchen swished. Breakfast and paid stuff.
We have a beautiful shoe cupboard in our utility room, it did cost about £120 from Arg@s but worth every penny. Getting people to put their shoes in it is another matter ..
Have sold a few things on ebay so I am going to get DS2 a new blind, his old one is broken and has been stuck half way down the window for 3 months. We have no neighbours at the back of the house but its not good when its getting lighter on a morning.
Oh and Pigpen I went to Primark with DS1 on Friday and bought him 2 sweatshirts, 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of trackie bottoms, 1 pair of shorts, 10 pairs of socks and a t shirt for £43. This is the same amount that DS2 spent on one top!
Right, paid stuff next. Have a good Monday everyone x0 -
Thanks for the lists, Valli and Natty. I will do as much of the kitchen one as I can fit in around other urgent things.
Thinking of you both, Dancemum and Mrs MP.
Good luck with the job Madam Mim.
I'm in this week, but working from my own listies. I can move back into my office today (hurrah!) and catch up with paperwork; that's a very high priority. I've got to return an *bay purchase because they sent the wrong thing, but that's not too bad because someone else has the right thing for £10 less after all.
Strip futon, wash three lots of bedding and hope that we have as much wind as yesterday to get some of that lot dry.
Need to do some trouser-making workshop homework for this Sunday, or the whole point of the course is wasted.
That's more than enough for one day.Better is good enough.0 -
