I'd like to find the nearest and cheapest places that sell my fuel of choice - LPG.
The app that Martin recommends depends on fuel cards being used to pay for whatever fuel is purchased. Not many business users in my area use LPG so a garage only a mile from my house that sells LPG does not appear on the app. I've tried the AA app as well and it's the same.
Does anyone know of a reliable app that I could use please? I've tried a few but ended up driving a few miles out of my way only to find that the garage has been closed for three years - or they no longer sell LPG.
I travel quite a bit - about 15k as a private motorist - and LPG per litre varies from 46p to 80p so it does matter.
I'd like to get a fuel card but this thread seems to be telling me that there isn't one for private motorists.

I used to have an App on iPhone years ago but it relied on the public entering the prices for the different garages which meant some were weeks/months out of date.
Sorry can't remember what the App was called as I never downloaded it again when I switched to Android.0 -
That's probably the one I was using. I put the up-to-date info on the site but still ended up on a few wild goose (or LPG) chases. I decided that I needed to join one of the motoring organisation as I am getting a bit over the hill now. After looking at the AA RAC etc I ended up signing up with the AA because they have a fuel app and so I rang them and asked if LPG was an option on the app. I was told that it is an option and the app will tell me the five nearest places and their prices too. That swung it for me.
I sat on the forecourt of the Morrison's filling station about a mile from my house after filling my tank with LPG and looked on the app. It said that there weren't any LPG pumps in my area!
I have sent them a few emails to find out why as I feel that I was conned. They haven't a clue! I got an email saying that the criteria for it appearing on the app is someone using the pump within the last 24 hrs and paying using a credit card.
I filled up, paid using a credit card and waited a few hours - nothing! I did the same again two days later -again nothing!
I got the same result sitting on the forecourt of another place that sells LPG.
I don't think anyone at the AA knows this so don't tell them that I told you :rotfl:but I think someone has to pay using a fuel card for it to register on the app.
Thanks for the thought.0 -
I think the only reliable way for them to collect data is through the fuel card schemes. And as you have found out this isn't always 100% reliable.
Even with petrol and diesel some garages aren't updated every day probably due to no fuel cards being used which means the price can still be a few pence out.0 -
The Waze app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waze&hl=en is probably the one you were using. It can handle Unleaded, Diesel, Super Unleaded and LPG.
It relies on users updating the prices, and marking whether each type of fuel is available. Unfortunately most users, including me, just update the prices that we can see on the big display as we drive past. That usually means just Unleaded and Diesel. I do update the LPG price if I can see it, but I think some people only update the type of fuel that they use and ignore the others.
Editing the prices is best done by a passenger, and has been made more difficult so that drivers won't attempt it while driving.
On a large screen tablet, the fuel search on your route is available as an icon. On a small phone you need to type in the search "gas". Searching for fuel, or diesel or petrol will find the filling stations, but "gas" displays them with prices.0 -
Careful with the cashback credit cards - The Amex for example is all over the place with their billing timings, so dont expect to pay the bill on payday! I got stung buy this - that and there are terms for the cashback, so whilst ive accumulated £135 cashback, unless i keep using the card i lose it. Months late ri still had a balance to pay (but no wages to pay it).
I also havent seen any of it yet as they issue it after 12 months. Knowing my luck it will be added to the balance of the card not hard cash.
A better idea is to look at Barclays and other debit card cashback - its instant, and you are using your debit card anyway, so why not turn the function on (if you, oike me, use one card all the time). Blue rewards its called and very easy to manage - amex is for rich folk who dont know or care when the bill comes out.0 -
PetrolPrices website has gone a bit down hill. The email alerts no longer list the stations with this lowest prices. They just want you to login to the website and pay them a subscription which kind of defeats the point of it in the first place.0

I know what you are saying, but you can still click through for free. If the alert is for the same price as yesterday and the day before it is likely that it is the same service station.Thank you for reading this message.0 -
But they hide certain stations under a padlock that cannot be seen unless you subscribe.
That together with the pageful of adverts they display means that PetrolPrices.com is a complete waste of time as you have no idea where the cheapest station is and is no longer in my favourites bar.
Basically they have become a scam site as far as I am concerned. Shame really because they were quite useful when they started out.
