Waze relies on users of the app to report the petrol prices, based on their GPS location being within a few hundred yards of the petrol station. Petrolprices.com gathers their price information from an automated process involving fuel discount cards.

Waze relies very heavily on their community members, and it doesn't seem unreasonable for those members to be rewarded with exclusive access to the info that they have jointly contributed. I suspect also that Waze would be criticised on the web for the very out of date prices in some locations. Any member who spots an out of date price simply corrects it themselves.

The mapping on the Waze website is used for members to edit the map. Members can make corrections in areas that they have recently driven through.

I could understand that if they were paying for it, and the developers were trying to protect their income, but it's free. If they offered it online the developers would earn ad revenue through the site too, and those of us that can't use the app still have access to the data (and provide more revenue for them).

But not a problem, just thought I'd ask :)

I see that crude has dropped to the low $40s per barrel yet petrol still £1.10+. Can anyone remember what petrol prices were when crude was last at this level many years ago?

You have to take in account of the value of £ to the $ not just the barrel price.

The Waze petrol price data is not very accurate, for a number of reasons. It can be a long way out of data if nobody has updated it, or if nobody can update it because there is no mobile data very close to the fuel station. Many people update only the Unleaded and Diesel prices and ignore the Super Unleaded and LPG prices because they are not displayed on the signs.

Wazers who are using the app will accept these inaccuracies, but Google cannot publish this info to the whole world without any means of verifying it. Let's hope they find a way round it soon.

Another gripe of ours is 'Transparency at the Pumps' We have been applying increasing pressure both in Government and to the Fuel retailers to explain why when Fuel Prices go UP - pump prices jump up immediately, but when fuel prices come down - we have to wait weeks to see the smallest of adjustments!

So you should be thanking me and not being rude to me.

So you do it for thanks rather than any actual good?

    Priceless.

    You'll forgive me if I don't...
  • Which petrol companies accept contactless payment (for TSB 5% cashback) ?

I know BP does, but in my local area they tend to be 5p more than asda, so little overall benefit. I saw a post that mentioned Morrisons taking contactless so I'll have a look to see if my local one does. (Don't usually shop there.)

How about Esso / Shell - they have garages near my local Asda which tends to keep their prices down.
  • Find a nearby costco with a PFS, use an AMEX card with rewards/benefits.... job done :)
