Being able to open an account without additional ID verification is pretty much the norm these days. They electronically identify you from data held by the Electoral Register and by Credit reference Agencies. If there is a mismatch between the data they hold for you / the data you provide and their electronic ID check, you are very likely asked to provide additional information. Whilst a completely new applicant whose data entered match those on the ER and CRAs, and whose name does not appear on fraud databases like CIFAS, may just sail through. As will an existing Santander customer whose address details held by Santander are current. So the vast majority of applicants will sail through in no time.julicorn said:
Oh yeah, we've definitely moved since he had the old account. I'm just mentioning it because there seem to be people on here who are new to Santander who were able to open their account in minutes.chris_the_bee said:
Something must have changed between old account and new. Perhaps he changed address. Happened to me, my wife had a closed account registered at our old address.julicorn said:Just to provide a bit of a counterpoint to everyone saying how easy it was to open the account: I just applied for one (under my husband's name), and they want him to send in black and white copies of his ID and proof of address... by post! Feels like stepping back in time but aw well. It'll be worth it I'm sure.
(Ironically he had an account with them before)

I get that, it's just that last few accounts I opened (with other providers), I was able to upload or email over anything they needed, rather than having to rely on snail mail. It's not a complaint, just an expression of surprise about their method.Daliah said:

Anyone with large amounts of savings and who has Santander as their nominated account at other banks might want to change their nominated account to a different bank, in order to be able to stay under £85K at Santander when shifting money around.
(If you don't know what I am on about, you are unlikely to be affected and can ignore me)1 -
Is it just me or does anyone else get irrationally anxious when transferring money between accounts?7

wish they had a 'savings account switching process' like they do for CASS or cash ISA transfers0

But your old savings account would then be closed and may prevent ease of access to return to that provider should that have been your only account and they become competitive again.km1500 said:wish they had a 'savings account switching process' like they do for CASS or cash ISA transfers
Talking of Cash ISA transfers. Gatehouse to Virgin Money - 5 days from handing in the paper form in VM branch. I am happy with that
