Was just about to suggest you look at the BIOS (for fan setting). This is more likely to be the issue (than a problem with the fan itself). Is it alright now?
    Hmm
I *think* that when it's under load it gets too hot, but when 'ticking over', it's fine.
I have set it to back up all his photos to Google cloud ...
I paused this last night and it was fine.
Restarted it at bedtime ... and it's gone off in the night :(

Standard procedure, clean off old and reapply new.
Best get shopping - what am I looking to buy?

I have to give it back today, so think I will

    a) pause Google back up
    b) order some paste
    c) have another look next week.

    Thanks all

    :)

    Evening all

    Sadly, I'm back again. :(

New SSD fitted and running well.
Incorrect RAM returned to CEX - not replaced, as yet.
    New battery fitted.
That's all the good stuff ...

    Now the bad news ...

I've removed the fan/heat sink assembly, cleaned off all the old thermal paste and applied new (Arctic MX-2)
    Sadly, it's still overheating.
At start up, I can hear the fan strike up for a while, but then when it starts to get hot, I can't hear the fan going again!
I've tried both 'silent' and 'normal' fan settings in the BIOS to no avail.
Speedfan 4.52 gave these results after a while of normal wokning.

I'm just struggling as to where to go with this really ..... :o

Assuming the paste was applied correctly (not too much!) and the fan is working...you say you never hear the fan, or rather it never gets loud? You are using Speedfan so... play with the fan settings - let's hear the fan! (if Speedfan won't let you control the fan, Notebook fancontrol is another one to try.)
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

    Well, I did RTFM ...

    (not too much!)
See above - I think so

    and the fan is working...
    Yes

you say you never hear the fan, or rather it never gets loud?
Not loud enough to hear anyway!

You are using Speedfan so... play with the fan settings - let's hear the fan! (if Speedfan won't let you control the fan,

Can't see any settings in there to control the fan, sorry - am I missing something?

Notebook fancontrol is another one to try.
Tried that too, but there is no 'config' for this laptop ... just one for Esprimo Mobile V5505
    Still a bit 'confused.com', sorry :o

    Further investigations .... :o

Someone very kindly PM'd me a YouTube link to make Speed Fan control the fan
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VjdQStihsE
but sadly, on the main front page, there are no fans found. :(

Also, when opening Notebook Fan Control, it tells me that the current fan speed is 164.5% ... but the fan isn't spinning at all (I've got the back off now and can see it static!)
But, on start up, the fan spins correctly till W10 has loaded, then nothing.

    The fan is a

    "SUPERRED"

    DC5v 0.5A
    CHA5605CS-OA-FH2

Why won't it spin when the PC is hot?

Tricky. Remind us what BIOS you finally ended up with. And I assume the fan is on all the time you're in the BIOS, so it may be "Windows 10" that's messing it up. May be a clue there...

Speedfan and NotebookFanControl look at a certain range of chips/registers for fan information; looks like the AH530 isn't in that range. On speedfan, guessing Configure -> Fan page is empty? If not, screenshot please. 164.5% from NFC is just a register being read that doesn't correspond to the AH530's fan details. I guess you loaded the V5505 configuration (being the only Fujitsu configuration); only a small chance this would work.
BUT if the fan isn't working IN W10 then perhaps we'd better look at that...

    1.21

In the BIOS now - fan not spinning!
Restarted into W10 and fan started spinning as W10 was loading, but then nothing.

    Hmmm ...

    Just seen this

    No help sadly :(

In Power Options, Advanced settings, System Cooling Policy ...
Battery was set to Passive and Plugged in was set to Active, but as it doesn't seem to work on either, I guess it's not an issue with that.

Do you wonder if it's something to do with the BIOS not sending the right message.
Ages ago, I flashed the BIOS to 1.19, but then I suspect W10 install has 'updated' it to 1.21

Is there a way to roll it back? Or am I barking up the wrong tree???

EDIT - just looked in Device Manager and ..
Intel Management Engine Interface has a yellow triangle
"This device cannot start (code 10)"

Search for a new driver tells me that "the best driver is installed" !!!!!!

Re. BIOS 1.21. Don't know where that came from; Windows cannot install a BIOS. You wouldn't normally downgrade the BIOS -but should be ok **at own risk**
Double check compatibility first. e.g. enter serial number from
    http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/Index.asp?lng=COM&OICID=138650
(you've done all this before and ended up with 1.19 I believe).

Regarding W10 drivers. You may have already got here
    https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/intel-r-management-engine-interface-this-device-cannot-start-on-windows-solved/
    ** But don't download DriverEasy **

Anything missing in the Device Manager?

Meant to post that before I went out ninety mins ago. :)

So let's investigate why the device cannot start....

Aaaahh...I see you already have instructions. We'll see which version Fujitsu supplied in the first instance....

    http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/IndexDownload.asp?SoftwareGuid=6EFBF9F9-1B1F-4146-BB45-65162CDE7E3E is the supported version.

There is also this Drver for Windows 10; http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/IndexDownload.asp?Softwareguid=CCC222FC-5110-42D6-BBC3-6CBB59AE1BC6
