I know you don't want to take the trouble involved in installing Pro, but will your friend be calling you when the next feature update messes up his device?0

It's just put ver 1809 on now, so it will be OK for a month!!!0 -
I'm back again, sorry
Just got everything running smoothly and now it's overheating - no sound at all from the fan so I presume something is broken!
Shall I just replace the fan - will it be that simple?
Google suggests I need some new 'paste' - any sort?0 -

The paste is for the CPU, not the fan.
Try using http://www.almico.com/sfscreenshots.php to check the parameters. This is not really my field.0 -
I just took the back off and looked again - all looked good so I started it up and could see the fan running.
Left it with the back off for half an hour and it was fine!
I just checked the BIOS and despite flashing it to 1.9, it's now on 2.1.
The fan in there was set to 'silent' so I swapped it to normal.
Will monitor the situation ...0 -
You may have dislodged the fan connector the previous time you were inside. This time you may have unknowingly pressed it back into place.0

Hmm
It seems to spin at startup, but then not as it warms up.
Would some new/more paste help?
I have taken it all apart and cleaned the gunk

Standard procedure, clean off old and reapply new.
