At the Custome install option, you want to erase exisiting partition and let W10 do its thing.

    I've flashed the BIOS ...

I was erasing the wrong partition on the install ... it's installing W10 now.

There is a local shop that has extracted data from a failed HDD before. Shall I go there or can 'we' do it from here?

I guess E/W is of to the beach soon?? ;)

I am already at the beach. Have been for the past four weeks. I only have a few days between trips.

You should be able to do it yourself. It likely hasn't failed and is just an issue of corruption.

Shame you didn't upgrade Windows 7 to Pro and take a snapshot of activation whilst everything was still working. Takes about five minutes to so. Then you could have installed 10 Pro.

Thinking about it, perhaps I gave you the wrong instructions for the upgrade and made it seem more onerous.

Edit: I did give the right instruction as it already had 10 installed. It just would have taken and ten minutes or so to install 7 and then 10.

    Preparing supper. Super hungry.

Have a go attaching it to your system and try following the link that I sent. If that doesn't work, then perhaps TestDisk next.

Anything like this one? He put a 128Gb and 4GB ram in. I would guess x86 windows, as x64 may slow it down - but varies with hardware

chkdsk wouldn't work, but EraseUs Partition Master did the trick.
Just extracting the data now, but still struggling with access as per post #20

64 bit won't slow anything down. What are you thinking?

    Unable to take ownership?

Went out for a noodle soup instead. Couldn't be bothered to mess around cooking at 1.30am.
