It's one of the most basic rules of the road in the UK, and it has been in place unchanged for longer than most drivers have been alive.
If they've forgotten it, that's their problem and their fault. Nobody else's. What other basic driving skills and knowledge have they forgotten...?
No one is trying to say its not the O/P's fault?
I was saying its not "obvious" unless you know that rule. There is nothing in that google street view that would immediately tell you it should be a 30 other than knowing the street lights means it is.
And its not a "basic driving skill" its a rule.0 -

Do you remember your driving test? Do you remember sitting there at the end with the examiner asking you questions about the rules of the road? And if you got them wrong, you'd fail? And its not a "basic driving skill" its a rule.
Well, in the last decade or two, they've started doing even more of that theory stuff before you're even allowed to book the practical test...0 -
Your avatar, is that a picture of you struggling to remember you name?BodyOfBones wrote: »That was the main thing I picked up on my first speed awareness course about repeater signs!

Exactly. Its not "obvious" if you dont know / cant remember / forgot the rule.
If the O/P had said he had crashed his car at night when driving with no lights on, then by all means he should be castigated for not putting his lights on as thats obvious.
Likewise doing 60MPH in snow. Its obvious you should slow down.
60MPH past a school with kids playing on the footpath. Blatantly obvious you should slow down to nigh on a crawl.
All obvious.
Obvious implies its logical with common sense applied. That road is a 30 purely because of the streetlamps and the associated rule. That is not "obvious" unless you know the rule.

Yup. Agreed. Thus its not "obvious" to all drivers, including older ones like myself that thats a 30MPH zone.
From the perspective of someone who has just passed their test and has had that rule and others hammered in to them then its "obvious" because they know the rule.0 -
You've just proven what i said - its "obvious" if you know that. There is no logical reason that that is the case, its just that a rule has been created saying that. If you dont know the rule its not "obvious".
Unless you know that the streetlights means its a 30, theres nothing at all in that street view to suggest it is.

No, I proved you wrong.
If you learn to drive you read the highway code and learn basic things like what speed limits are and what signs mean. If you have forgotten these, the answer is to re-read it, not complain about the rules being enforced.Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I'm not complaining, and if it happened me i'd take my medicine on it and get on with it.
But your argument wholly relies on the fact that its "obvious" its a 30. The only thing make it obvious is if you know / remember the rule. Theres no signs there to say its a 30.
Lets be honest here - a pound to a penny says the main reason they put a speed check there is because they know it isnt obvious its a 30. Easy money for them.0 -
What "things?
It is simply a matter of inductive reasoning. For example we know the following about this fellow::- He works in an industrial estate which is removed from the nearest town
- He drives a performance vehicle therefore is likely to be involved in a sales or executive role at a medium sized enterprise. The type of place where stock moves fast and people move faster
- He is the sort of chap to not pay attention to speed signs, even in places he works every day
- He is likely to commute through at least one major and congested town on the way to and from work, probably to an aspirational new build housing estate of some sort
- He will put his foot down if he thinks he can get away with it
All these attributes point towards an impulsive gentleman who is on balance, most certainly an amber gambler.0 -
Well on that low note, it seems this thread seems to be going down some Alice in Wonderland Rabbit Hole, so i'm out
