That's disappointing, especially considering that according to news stories, supplies of traditional meters are ending.

I think smart meters with removable comms would have been a good compromise, since it now seems all old meters at end of life will be replaced with ones containing a comms module whether the customer likes it or not.

Smart meters are not really as "optional" as you suggest?

You are welcome to have your own meter installed as long as it's type approved. There are plenty of tested and type approved meters still available. They do not have to be brand new.

The supplier would need reasonble grounds to refuse.
If the meter is type approved and tested it's hard to see what those grounds might be espeically if smart meter installation is optional and they were giving you no choice.

I’ve just complained to eon about the “you agreed to have a smart meter fitted” emails, smss and letters.

I’ve got this tariff “Fix Online Exclusive v6” and as far as I can see it’s optional.

Hello pete-20-11 and you're right. Smart meters are optional.

The T&Cs on your Fix Online Exclusive v6 (section 11.1) say you agree to be contacted about having smart meters fitted. You can turn these offers down and stay on your chosen tariff. The relevant part of the T&C is as follows.

With this tariff you agree to be contacted during the tariff term for the installation of a smart meter.

I'm sorry you're unhappy with the contact you've received about smart meters. As I've mentioned above, you might want to take advantage of an opt-out. This won't stop contact about smart meters altogether as we've a regulatory duty to offer these meters to all our customers and to make aware them aware of any significant developments with the roll out. It will slow down the frequency of contact. I posted more about this on 31 October 19 (#145).

I've added your post to the feedback I've been sending to those here responsible for these communications.

Many thanks for your feedback pete-20-11.

That's really useful information. I found this one for instance:

    https://www.electricaldirect.co.uk/product/100a-single-phase-digital-check-meter-436268

Which is indeed "MID Approved". I wonder what would happen if one purchased that and asked the energy company's installer to install that instead when he/she turns up.
  • Malc I think that’s just unfair . All of your messages are wholly wrong - email text message and letter all say “you need to have your meter changed “. Eon know this is wrong and have known for months ....

Any comment on this recent National Newspaper article from Eons point of view Malc? Its about old dumb meters now no longer made or available, so its a smart meter or nothing !

They would refuse point blank. Nothing stopping you getting a private qualified Electrician to fit it and certify it..I doubt it would be cheap, then probably the DNO would have to come out and inspect it that its done properly.
I can see you being approx £250 down on the years electricity .So much for saving money ..You would be better off just accepting the smart meter.

I had one delivered today too . I would suggest raising a formal complaint with eon ... and then escalating to deadlock letter and referring to Ofgem
I raised this months ago with the directors office and the web team . Both said they would look into it - same incorrect messages still going out makes me believe they don’t care .
Malc I think that’s just unfair . All of your messages are wholly wrong - email text message and letter all say “you need to have your meter changed “. Eon know this is wrong and have known for months ....

As promised Greenenergy. I've passed on yours and others feedback about our smart meter messaging to the relevant people. I'm happy to continue doing this.

    Thanks.

  • Malc appreciate you doing this but ultimately someone at eon appears to be of the opinion that continuing to deceive customers is ok ... outrageous if you ask me and the reply I had from the directors office was a blanket we don’t think it’s a problem so we’re closing your complaint. By virtue of that eon simply don’t care .

E.on will be able to justify misleading comms to the regulator, seeing as the regulator is fining energy companies for missing targets. Sadly, the consumer is inconsequential in this matter.
