According to the National press yesterday, 4 th November , dumb meters are now no longer available and only smart meters are now being fitted and offered. .So they are now mandatory by default.
    Source?

In any case, the comms module could be omitted, so smart meters are obviously not 'mandatory by default' (sic), as Ofgem confirms: "they aren’t compulsory and you can choose not to have one".

I'm still waiting to hear back from Malc as to whether the comms module is physically removable from SMETS2 meters.

So the Eon installer arrived this morning. I asked him to confirm that he was installing a SMETS2 meter, and sure enough that was the plan.

After some initial grumbles about the light rain, he concluded that he wasn't going to be able to carry out the installation as it was too wet. Then he proceeded to schedule another visit.

Whilst booking another visit, he told me that he was going to list the reason for cancellation as "customer wanting to reschedule" because putting anything else down would "raise too many questions"

I called Eon shortly afterwards to tell them to cancel any future appointments, and to note that the installation was aborted of there own engineers decision and through no choice of mine.

I'm not prepared to keep taking time off work to have installations aborted due to light rain. The rain actually stopped whilst he was there, and our meter is actually concealed in a cabinet, so wasn't even wet. I expect the probability of weather being worse in two weeks time is probably higher than now.

    What a farce.

A costly one at that, funded by us. I think you made the right decision.

The frustrating thing is, the engineer actually seemed to have decided the meter wasn't going to be installed from the minute he arrived.

He may as well not have turned up and let me know on the call before arriving at my home.

He must have been on job and knock.

I'd love to hear the number of aborted smart meter installs, since it seems to happen a fair bit from what I read. Not that we need more proof of what a mess the situation is.

I’ve just complained to eon about the “you agreed to have a smart meter fitted” emails, smss and letters.

I’ve got this tariff “Fix Online Exclusive v6” and as far as I can see it’s optional.

It is not physically removable but he supplier could "promise " to keep the data away from the DCC

That is disappointing if true as I'm sure those who are minded not to have a smart meter for reasons of avoiding smart meter comms are unlikely just to take the energy company's word for it.

I would still like confirmation from Malc. Perhaps some models have physically removable comms as I'm assuming there are various brands/models on the market.

I can assure you , as a BG meter reader, after following meter fitters around since 1999 fitting dumb meters, exactly the same thing happened to a greater extent because they were working much quicker..Its the nature of the business .
Customers routinely "gave me grief" as the face of British Gas on their doorstep , when they had waited in all day for a no show by the fitter..A daily occurance
The £30 standard compensation was dished out in huge numbers. Even I got a couple of them.
That s how meter fitters work, people don t answer doors , people are out when they call.meter fitters get held up in traffic and problem jobs..Its not a conspiracy and its not in a "mess "
