EON Smart Meters

Hi Malc of E.ON, thanks for your reply. As the meter itself or its location won't change, all of the above drawbacks you've highlighted will stay the same
and... different types of IHD and many show meter readings ...
With the old meters I could open open the meter door, step back slightly and read the meter. I didn't need to crouch, prayer-like, to see the display. It was there, in full view and permanently displayed. However, a poor quality LED and it's poor positioning (angle?) that creates this problem. Surely if the industry creates a problem then it isn't unreasonable to expect that same industry should fix it. It makes this worse now I know that there is a simple solution to this issue, i.e. simply having an IHD that shows meter readings.
Shouldn't the Regulator be ensuring that the IHD's with meter readings go to people who actually need them and not just sent out at random? Especially for consumers who feel they need to keep their own records as they have lost all faith in the entire sector due to having been let down badly by their past four suppliers, Iresa, Avro, Eversmart and even the one the Regulator provided, Utilita. yet can't take those readings because they have issues seeing the Smart displays?

I have an open formal complaint with Eon about the wholy misleading messages that are sent out to customers stating that "When you signed up to your energy tariff you agreed to have smart meters fitted"...
I would encourage everyone to lodge formal complaints with Eon about this misleading wording.
These messages were sent to me both as SMS and email. The person who contacted me is currently investigating but they were still pushing me to get one . My complaint is solely about the misleading wording - Having this raised this initially months ago clearly Eon have an agenda to push these.0 -

Hi Malc,
Further question, I ended up trying to switch to your Fix 2 year V4 but right at the end hit the hurdle of arranging to have a smart meter installed. Explained that I didn't want one and was told you can't go on to the tariff then.
Could you confirm if I can also reject a smart meter on the Fix 2 year V4 and stay on the tariff or are the T&Cs different for this one?
Many thanks.0 -

I can but my other half is computer illiterate so I try and avoid online accounts as it would make things hard for her if anything happened to me. Still an option though and I have another month to run on my current tariff.0

I have just cancelled planned installation of meter due to the fact Eon cannot guarantee which meter I would get. If/when I reschedule it will be dependent on whether or not they are able to guarantee SMET2 being installed0

"We'll contact you about smart meters and arrange the best time to fit them in your home. If we can't install them, or you don't want a smart meter, you'll stay on this tariff."
Can the bit in bold I wrote be added to the E.on website, Malc, in order to avoid further confusion?
Many thanks for the suggestion oliverbrown.
I've added this to the feedback I've been sending through to the managers both from this thread and others.
I can't promise anything and am happy to keep raising this.
Thanks again.

Hello Halifax_sux and you raise some interesting points.
It wouldn't be right for me to comment on the activities of other suppliers or the Regulator as my responsibility is confined solely to all things E.ON.
I do understand the difficulties you've outlined and I can tell you we're working on an Accessible In-Home Display. This is initially aimed at helping our partially-sighted customers although I suspect it will be made more widely available as specific needs are identified. It will only be available with SMETS2 smart meters.
This display will have a high contrast coloured screen with easy to navigate buttons. It will also speak to customers to tell them various pieces of information including meter readings. Don't worry, the speech part can be turned off if not needed.
We've also introduced new In-Home Displays with our SMETS2 meters. These, too, show readings. There's more information about these on our website.
We're looking to develop our products all the time as I'm sure other suppliers are doing. As I say, this isn't something I can comment on.
Hope the stuff about our displays is of interest Halifax_sux.
