Humpty.......well done on bringing up the subject of stress incontinence and the importance of a healthy pelvic floor. i did think about discussing it once but I wondered if the moderators would think it was too "medical".
But you are right.....it is terribly important and I am so glad they haven't deleted your post.
For anyone who is struggling please do get help and advice. Don't be embarrassed. It's too important. You can discuss these kind of issues with the practice nurse if you don't have access to a female doctor. If you have difficulty in performing the exercises (which are called kegel exercises and there's lots of info if you want to read up on tinterweb) there various cones and weights that you can use to help.
Candy.....good news about Zeus. And glad Bonnies back. I bet they have missed each other.
Maman. When I went for my massage yesterday, the salon was very cold. I mentioned it and my girl said she was so sorry but the heating was on full belt. She had already got an extra blanket ready and basically she made sure that I was well covered and only exposed the bit she was working on, which is exactly how I was taught.
Even in a warm room a client does not want to be too exposed, partly to keep warm of course because it is essential that the areas that have been massaged are then kept warm and not allowed to get chilled but also for modesty's sake. A good therapist should always ensure that a client is both physically comfortable ie warm enough and that his or her dignity is respected and that they are not made to feel exposed, vulnerable or embarrassed.
Sounds like your therapist either wasn't very well trained or that she simply couldn't care less.0 -

I have been recently widowed and I am trying to maintain enthusiasm for getting myself together, making an effort, to remember who I am, and getting out to socialise.
Hello Callapygia (what an unusual nom de plum, what does it mean).
I am so sorry to hear that you are a recent widow, widowhood really is the pits. You get to become a member of a club you never wanted to join..
Take it gently and do take especial care of your health and well being.
I don't know that it gets easier as such but I think that, over time, we just learn to live with our new reality. Life without our loved ones is very different of course but it can still be good if we give it half a chance.
I am glad you have come out of lurkdom and joined us.0 -
lessonlearned, that was really good advice you gave. I totally agree the best thing you can start with is standing up straight and smiling. Even if you don't always feel like smiling "fake it till you make it" is my byword.
Gummy na, can you afford around £3:00 a week ? if you can you will soon build up a good base of the likes of Aldi skincare, if you don't have very sensitive skin. If you cant, the very basics are, as mentioned, cupboard fixes. Attitude is a great booster, tell yourself your fabulous every single day, walk everywhere as if you own it. I know this sounds a bit skinflinty but I have used he little jars bought from poundland, I think they are supposed to be travel containers. I take them to big stores and fill them from tester pots. I do ask if its ok first, tell the girls on the counter I want to try the product at home, as I have so many cosmetics that don't suit my skin in the house, or I' wearing makeup already blah blah . Never sleep with makeup on, and teeth are very important, people see them when you speak, so baking soda comes into play. Let us know how you get on.:T:jDabbler in all things moneysaving.Master of none:o

Callapyia means "of the beautiful buttocks" so well done there lol. Lessonlearned, I find a lot of the salons and treatments on the likes of Groupon are on there for a reason, the reason is they are not very customer focussed, that is, not making their money, and that's why they have to give promotional prices. I hope you give them honest feedback, I always do, its the only way they know why people don't go there.:T:jDabbler in all things moneysaving.Master of none:o

The physio suggested something rather more interesting than cones but I think I will get deleted if I tell :rotfl: I do think her down to earth, frank approach was great, no messing about. I'm lucky as after 4 pregnancies and one very difficult forceps birth of a 10lb baby I don't have any problems with incontinence but I image it must be really depressing. I had my first in the very early 70s in the days when you were in hospital for a week after a normal birth and as a teenager I got nagged by midwives, it obviously worked as I've always done my exercises, I can still see the rather large very scary Sister on the ward lecturing me on everything from my pelvic floor to what to eat for breakfast. I should say how grateful I am to her, sometimes the bossy authoritarian approach is a good idea although not popular now. She used to say, "Don't waste time, if you're standing at the bus stop you can exercise your pelvic floor, being a busy new mum doesn't mean you haven't got time for yourself." So if you've ever seen a strange lady concentrating hard at the bus stop that will be me :T0 -
It was chanie who had the cold treatment with Groupon.:) My experiences, thankfully, have been mostly good. Yes there are salons who need to attract business for the wrong reasons teedy but there are others who IMO are charging too much in the first place exacerbated by people cutting back on spending because of the austerity policy.
I'm very happy with my cheap (and very busy) Vietnamese nail shop. I used to be happy with the beautician that did my eyebrows but she had a greedy landlord so she moved away. It's like everything, you need to shop around.:)
Second funeral this afternoon. Not so cold today so I'll wear my black velvet coat and plan to wear my tartan scarf with it because my friend was a dancer.:)0 -
Yes there are several other recommendations other than cones but I think we do have to be careful about not straying too far into medical stuff. :rotfl:
Well good morning lovely ladies. Another damp, dark, dreich day. Finding it hard to get going and even harder to find the motivation to do much. I have to wait in for the delivery guy so At least I'm not committed to doing anything or going anywhere today.
On such a day it's hard not to feel "flat" and weary. My get up and go has certainly got up and gone. :rotfl:
Moll - where are you diet buddy?? You have not checked in for a while, I'm on your case. ......... If you've fallen off the wagon then, in the words of the old song, pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again. January is nearly over..
Well some little bit of good news. After plateauing for a few weeks I have lost 1.5lbs. Not much to be sure but better than nowt.
Moll, That leaves me 9.5lbs to lose by your birthday (March 27th? If memory serves). So roughly 2 months. It should be doable. Then a further stone by July 6th. Giving it my best shot.
Right time for brunch, then tidy up, do my exercises, then cook a nice meal. I might do a bit of paperwork sorting - see how I feel. Or I might just curl up with a book.
Gave up with Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. The film was better. Albert Finney really bought the character to life, on the Page he's dull as ditchwater. :rotfl: Flicked through the Colette book. Again not for me.
I don't read a lot of fiction, when I do it has to really grab my attention or I quickly lose interest. I really prefer either biographies or non fiction.
I am currently reading "Stuffocation" (about clutter) and "Supergenes". Although both are are quite academic they are easy reads and I find them interesting.
Right time to get cracking.....(if I must).
Wouldnt it be nice if we could hibernate for a couple of months, and then wake up in spring - slim, svelte and raring to go.0 -
Well done on bringing up the incontinence problems that lots of women suffer from. My Yoga teacher of over 25 years always has part of her session focusing on the pelvic region and like Humpty - my first big baby was a forceps delivery in the late 60's. Dont know if its because of my yoga practice but so far no problems.
Nipping out to pick up a bracelet from the jeweller - I've had a couple of little charms added to it that I bought while on holiday last year. I've put some make up on for the second time this week lol!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Fab news! Zeus has healed well n had stitches out, but has had another blood test 're the bleeding , n I've picked Bon up from kennels, so chaos reigns once again :rotfl:
:A Aw.humptydumptybits wrote: »Wednesday, the physio on the programme did say women who haven't had children do still get the problem so probably a good idea to do them. Like eandjsmum I did learn them at antenatal classes but don't think they were quite so frank with the instructions e.g. think you are in a lift with your boss/mother in law/secret crush and know that you are about to do an absolutely horrendous fart and try to stop it. I was driving at the time and some of it, funnier than the fart in the lift, did make me laugh.
I have actually been doing the pelvic floor exercises on and off since I was a teenager, my Mum explained to me how to do them. I should do them every day, though.:DCallapygia wrote: »I've been lurking for a long time. I have to say lessonlearned I find your positivity very encouraging.

Welcome to new people.
Funeral went well this afternoon. The church was packed which was lovely for the family. Have to say I hope I don't need to go to another for a while though.
I think you're right to make an effort and get out and socialise callapygia. I'm sure it's not easy but I'm also sure you'll feel better for it.:)
I decided to do my food shop while I was out. As I was in a different part of the city I used a different branch of Aldi and then popped into Asda. It was mainly to fill up my car but I wanted a few bits in the store as well. I picked up some leggings and two black tops. The tops will be perfect for dancing and the viscose fabric won't lose it's colour. I like the swing style rather than a vest as it doesn't cling so it's cooler. In my store they only had black, white and a cornflower blue but I think it comes in other colours too.

When I was in Aldi, I was impressed with a woman of a similar age to me that was able to sort of crouch down (while staying on her feet IYSWIM) to look at things on a low shelf. It's strange that although my calves are strong from dancing my thighs are not so I know I'd find that difficult. I need to do some exercises.:D I remember friends doing exercises to get them in shape for skiing. That's maybe what I need.:)0
