  • I think the spread of the car coincided with people being scruffier. I'm not sure why but when I was a young mum, early 70s, very few other mums had their own car even if there was a family car i.e. husband's car. As women got cars I noticed they made less effort when just popping out on the school run and to local shops etc and so it spread. I think maybe the car felt like "their" space rather than say the bus which was a public space. Not sure if that makes sense but it was definitely something I noticed.
  • On how much we spend on clothes I was amazed when a commentator said that pale blue coat that Theresa May seems to be wearing like a comfort blanket cost something like £700, can't remember the exact figure but it was definitely around seven hundred. Looking at it I wouldn't have thought it was £100 let alone several. I'm not saying it is a bad coat, I can imagine wearing it for country walks, back when we had a dog I would have definitely thought it was practical but £700.

Wednesday so pleased that you are happy with your purchases. Seems the term peel applies to the newer generation of exfoliating products that are used instead of scrubby ones, I find it all confusing on times.

Maman - you have found some interesting topics to listen to, I mainly have our local BBC station switched on in the kitchen as I love to sing along (tunelessly) to the songs and as well as the local goings on they discuss many thought provoking subjects. OH likes Radio 4, but I am rarely still enough to listen properly.

SSDD23 - Your proposed new hair style and colour sounds great, shame about the bath though:eek::eek::eek:

Knit N Natter today, need to get a shift on, shower, hair wash and style and a quick tidy up of my nails required. I am getting excema on my hands again, I think it is from them getting hot and damp in gardening gloves, I will look out the cheapie cotton gloves that I bought and wear 2 layers, might help, but not easy with having dexterity problems as I need to feel what I am doing.

Very cold, but bright here, have a great day everyone.

Just having a well earned coffee break......:D

I have dug out a big bag of summer clothes, mainly very small 16s and 14s. Not tried them on yet, but At the rate I'm going with my weight loss I reckon will be wearing them in around a months time. A whole new wardrobe just waiting for me......What larks. :rotfl: it's quite exciting.

Can't wait to get rid of my larger clothes. I'm sick to death of some
Of them. Some are lovely, especially the evening and occasion wear, and could maybe be altered but often they are never quite right afterwards. I might just let them go and let someone else enjoy them.

£700 for that blue coat........she was robbed. :rotfl: I am afraid I can't stand those big necklaces she wears.........I don't know if they were cheap but many of them look it. They are just too big. And I wish she would stand up straight. She has got very rounded shoulders. Perhaps its the weight of the necklaces......:rotfl:

Bless her. She's looking very tired. Whatever your views on politics and Brexit I have to say I do feel sorry for her. She must be under enormous pressure. All that travelling. She's a type 1 diabetic too, she cant be doing herself much good.

Without wishing to get political, I'm sure that, like most of the country, I'm all brexited out. ;). I've had enough.

On a more cheery note.....talking about big jewellery. On my last cruise I splashed out and bought myself some jewellery, cubic zirconia stones. (A posthumous gift from my husband)

Now you can buy cubic zirconia rings that look like knuckle dusters.....very vulgar.:rotfl:

However, I've found that if you are careful and don't go too large they can look very convincing. I bought some pieces that are smaller and they do pass for diamonds. The rings I bought have stones that are large enough to look like very expensive diamond rings but not so big as to look obviously fake.

I wore one on Sunday. Both Dil and her sister kept eyeing it up. I could see them wondering if it was real. (If it was we would be talking £10k). In the end I told them the truth and they had great fun trying it on.

I still have to sort out mums jewellery. Now there was a lady who liked her sparkly stuff. :rotfl: all of it real too.

LL - I too despair at the amount of overweight young women I see in my neighbourhood. I just wonder if they realise how much their health is being compromised at an early age :( I do notice that not as many young men seem to be affected though.
I did chuckle at the photos of the ladies in the cafe - I used to tell my Mum DONT WEAR BEIGE! TBH she didnt though ;) but they were clean and tidy which is more than you can say for some.
Ladies - before I start baring my legs in public does anyone know of a self tanning cream that doesnt stink! I saw one reccomended in a magazine but do you think I can find the article now? Ideally I'd like something that can build up gradually especially as I'll be in Greece at the end of May & dont want to look like a beached whale lol.

eta: LL I agree with you on Theresa's necklaces - just a bit too chunky and like you I keep thinking Stand Up Straight Woman! it makes her look apologetic somehow. I do think she's been given the poison chalice whatever your view on Brexit

I'm not a fan of the coat, the necklaces or Theresa!:D All I'd say is that she's certainly an advocate of cost per wear when it comes to the coat. ;)

It rather depends on what you mean by stink!:D I use the Palmers Cocoa Butter self tan.

It works well either on its own or mixed with body lotion if you want really gradual. I've been using it to make sure my arms don't look too pale with my evening wear this weekend. I also use it after a holiday to prolong my natural tan. The trouble is it smells to me of chocolate digestives!:D Fortunately the smell doesn't last too long (says she sniffing arm!;)).

I agree that it doesn't cost a huge amount to look smartly turned out LL. With careful buying from the likes of Primark, Matalan and TKMaxx and definitely the CS it's easy to put together a few outfits cheaply.

Being Wednesday, it's fashion pages in my paper. One article is about the popularity of pink showing a range of tailored trouser suits. I could probably get away with a deep fuschia but the pastels do nothing for me. I think it depends on your colouring. I have one pink summer skirt but can't wear it next to my face without looking washed out.

The other article made DH laugh as he's convinced I must write for the paper. I showed him the photos of wide legged, 'Kathryn Hepburn' trousers just like the ones I was wearing on Monday!

It's bright and dry here. I'm going to pop out later so I'll make a bit of effort not to look scruffy! I wouldn't want to let the side down. :D

I was on the underground train listening to music and reading this thread and noticed the young guy next to me was staring and I realised I was laughing out loud at the comments about Theresa May.:o

She has a stunning figure so she really should look into seeing a chiropractor for her posture! I'm sure she can afford it.:D

I bought two black coats from the £1 chazzer, one was a size 12 trench coat and one was a size 16 winter coat and neither do up.

I asked my husband if I have broad shoulders as I have a problem with finding coats and jackets that fit properly.

It was funny as I have been looking for a trench coat since I read that Gok Wan book and can't seem to find one that fits me properly.

I'm top heavy so the bigger sizes are far too big round the hips! Some of them make me look like I'm wearing a man's coat.:rotfl:

I can probably get away with wearing the new coats not done up as they both look okay on me anyway.

Yes, not that I have ever done a peel before but I was expecting it to be a clear gel. Oh well, I will see how it goes.:)

I love Katherine Hepburn styling, fabulous tailoring. She caused quite a stir in her day because she went against the norm, insisting on wearing trousers and refusing to dress like a typical Hollywood starlet. A lot of the time she wore Spencer Tracey's clothes after his death.

You do have to be tall though for those trousers, they would swamp a shorter person.

Re baby pink. Last year I bought myself a baby pink coat online. It was 16 but it was very small. It is so pretty I didn't send it back but vowed I would wear it "One Day". It almost fits now, I can wear it loose but not buttoned.

It is so pretty with decorative buttons and a lace trim on the sleeves and the back half belt. I call it my "Paris" coat because it reminds of pictures of "tres Chic" French models. I shall wear it when I go to Paris one fine day. I read somewhere that pink is perfect for Paris.

Baby pink is not a colour I could ever have worn when I was younger but now with my white hair and softer skin tones I can. :D. I will wear it for the christening, at least for the church bit. It will doubtless be cold in church.

Do you remember Jackie Os navy and bright fuscia pink suit......I did have a coat just like it. I loved it. It was the first coat I ever bought myself out of my own wages. After JFKS assassination I did feel a bit self conscious in it though so stopped wearing it.

I just went to try on the coats again and thought the sleeves look too short on one and realised it was labelled a petite. Doh. Oh well it was only £1.:D

I think when I lose weight I will have to go to a big department store and try coats on. There must be a shop that caters for top heavy women. I've noticed a lot of shops cater to pear shaped women, maybe because that is the more common body shape in this country.

Anyway, I'm about to clean my face and try this peel.

Speaking of department stores, sad to see Debenehams are struggling again. Our local rag seems to think our store is scheduled for the chop. That will be our last, all we will have left is M&S and the usual high street names.

I suppose it's the end of an era. Shopping habits have changed and the department stores have become dinosaurs. High rents and rates have pushed them over the edge. But Wednesday I think you are right, it was always the department stores that had the best choice of winter coats.

Do any of you have a store called Apricot. Had a mooch the other day. Quite impressed although I didn't buy anything.
