  • Oh I just discovered this thread! I’m in please. I am committing to decluttering a bag a week. I don’t have masses of items but things aren’t organised too well. Especially my art and craft items :o

    Happy New Year!

Sorry I dropped off towards the end of last year, I'm an artist and work got a little overwhelming all of a sudden, (I completed my last Christmas order on the 23rd Dec! :o, still have one open one but shh I'm planning on doing that for Friday).

I'm going to aim for 2019 in 2019. I may be insane.... BUT! I turn 30 in May and I need to be organised and able to breathe by then. I haven't used my desk in over 12 months because it's been buried >.<

I don't know it's been talked about or if anyone has seen it, but there is a series called "Tidying up with Marie Kondo" on Netflix now. I'd heard of Marie Kondo and knew of her "spark joy" phrase but buying the book never appealed. I love the program though! I've had it on while tidying today. ( I've just read back and seen people were talking about it... oops!)

1 & 2 - too big clothes offered to lil sis
    3 - 5 - clothing for charity shop.
6 - 8 - clothing taken from wardrobe and into materials (I know it's not gone but I feel categorising it has taken it from clutter to something with a role/purpose)
    9 - 37 - clothing thrown!

This is probably going to sound really silly but honestly the Marie Kondo bits that sound daft, like getting all of the clothes out from everywhere in one go, and holding things and thanking them really really helps!
I know a lot of the clothes I've thrown I have put back in the wardrobe so many times when trying to sort it out.
It's like having everything out shocks you into stopping the sentimentality, and accepting you don't need all of this stuff!

But the silly saying thankyou and acknowledging things allows you to do the sentimental bit "yes I loved you when I was at uni, I wore you all the time" but still allows the "but your now nearly 10 years old and your a bit bobbly and you've had your time"

I honestly recommend it if your anything like me and can find a reason for keeping something, I'm awful! Especially when it comes to clothing, I downgrade things to for the boat, for dog sitting, for painting... things I don't really like any more but feel bad for throwing, when really I have way too much stuff and I don't need to do that >.<
This system is really helping battle that! <3
anything's possible if you've got enough nerve

Gin monster, WHAT AN EXCELLENT IDEA :T:T May I appropriate this as one of my mantras? It is such a simple idea that it beggars belief that no one else has thought to mention it :rotfl: With ideas like that you are a very welcome addition to our bandwagon :T & you have earned yourself a big gold star from me :staradmin :rotfl: Thank you so very much :T:T

    1. SMALL TASKS WILL BE DONE ASAP
    2. I WILL LEAVE A ROOM TIDIER THAN WHEN I ENTERED
    3. KITCHEN WILL BE LEFT CLEAN & TIDY EVERY NIGHT
    4. WHEN DEALING WITH CLUTTER I WILL USE ‘Daisy1571’s idea of ‘WHAT WOULD I DO WITH THIS ITEM IF IT WAS SOMEONE ELSE’S ?’
An additional mantra, compliments of Ginmoster :T
    5. IF I WAS STARTING FROM SCRATCH, WOULD I BUY THIS?
And one more, DundeeDoll’s new signature :T
    6. BE LIKE A POSTAGE STAMP - STICK TO ONE THING UNTIL YOU GET THERE

DH lured me out of bed with a mug of tea at 11:30 this morning  However, am I bothered? maybe a little bit but I obviously needed the sleep :D

Today we had our roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. Lots of leftovers for tomorrow & I imagine there will be enough to freeze at least a couple of portions - and more to the point I do have some space in the freezer or I could make soup :D Decisions, decisions :rotfl:
An hour & a half later we had our Christmas pudding - Baileys cream for DH & I, thick double cream for DSis. Scrummilicious :D

I was looking for something to do & decided to go with a full sort out of my wardrobe :) Hanging space & shelves. Took everything out & laid on the bed. The hanging space is now sorted into warm weather clothing & cold weather clothing - two ‘party’ tops & a long sleeved top in cs bag. All the clothes hangers are facing the ‘wrong’ way a la Wanna Bee Free. Now the clothes are sorted by ‘season’ each side will have 6 months & then I will see if anything has not been worn. Not sure there will be anything worthy of the cs, but I can always rag bag :)
The top shelf garnered a medium sized ‘party’ handbag, a pair of ugg style slippers & a cushion pad for cs bag.
The contents of the 5 side shelves have now been rearranged & I now have 2 completely empty shelves :j
Only need to sort the floor of the wardrobe which has my shoes - which I will probably do in an advert break.

The cs bag also has a small bag of XMas cracker bits & bobs - nail clippers, mini mirror, puzzles etc, 3 charity calendars & a Chinese calendar.

    So numbers

5 - 14 Handbag, 3 Tops, slippers, cushion pad, 4 calendars, bag of XMas cracker it’s & bobs - All to cs
15 One (empty) beer bottle rinsed & recycled :rotfl:

So glad I found this thread. I started in June after having to move mother in law to sheltered accommodation and inheriting all her unwanted stuff! It made me realize I wouldn't want to give my children this task. We have wall to wall wardrobes in 3 rooms all of which were bursting at the seams so ebay was the way to go by Christmas I had earned enough for all Christmas gifts and a short break. Hubby who was very reluctant is now pointing out items to list. It's amazing what people will buy whilst looking for perfume for a gift I found the empty bottles are in demand who knew? I intend to continue this year and only have clothes we actually wear. I have listed chest of drawers on FB sale site as now it's empty I want it gone before it gets refilled. Will keep popping in to see how everyone is doing.
  • Evening everyone :)

Not much done today but have cleared off a lot of the kitchen table. Been watching the Marie Kondo series on Netflix and been getting a few tips off there, quite interesting to watch. I love the way she folds clothes!

Happy New Year everyone!_party__party_.It is lovely seeing so many new faces, and old :).

I have been decluttering, tidying, sorting my house like a mad woman since Sunday :o.On Sunday I deep cleaned kitchen, downstairs bathroom, front room, and hallway.

From Monday onwards,I have been [STRIKE]nagging[/STRIKE] assisting the kids to declutter, tidy and sort their bedrooms.Talk about pulling teeth :(:eek:.

So,at this point,above-mentioned rooms have had a very thorough once-over,plus 3 bedrooms. No room is minimalist, but it is incredible how much rubbish is lurking, especially in 9yo/12yo bedroom.Even when the room looks tidy,do a big declutter like this, and there is packaging, used writing paper, bits of toys all over the place .Our bins and recycling were collected today. We have 2 recycling bins for cardboard and plastic, and after collection, they have both already been refilled :eek:.

Has anyone here played the Mins Game before?I thought I would give it a go,see how it goes. But naturally,I am bending the rules to suit myself :D.In the original game (by The Minimalists),you get rid of 1 item on the first of the month,2 items on the second,3 on the 3rd etc.By the end of a 31 day month, you will have got rid of 496 items :T:T.

Some people play it backwards, because as you get rid of stuff,it gets harder to find things,so they get rid of 31 items on the 1st,30 on the 2nd,etc.

Me?I am doing it differently again :o.At the moment,I am on holiday, the kids are all home and can help (hoarding partner doesnt do much ).When school and work go back next week,I wont have the hours I am spending on decluttering at the moment. So I am doing it a bit randomly.I have drawn up a chart with months across the top, numbers 1-31 going down.Yesterday I gave a bag of 9 clothes to a friend,so on box for 9th of Jan,I put the date,1-1 (just to tell me what date I got rid of 9 items.Alot of people would just tick the "9" box, with no care for what particular date 9 items went out.But I am different :o:o).Today I got rid of 35 items,so I put todays date in 31st Jan box,and 4th Jan.It means that on days where life is too busy,I only have "small numbers" of things to get rid of,instead of 31 items.
If you were to play this game everyday this year (hardcore!!),5738 items would leave your house by the end of the year :eek::j:j:T:T
