Most of the Service plan companies,(B Gas, Npower etc) will inspect and expect it to be in good condition before cover starts.

There are hundreds of posts about the pros and cons of these schemes. There really isn't much advice to give, only opinions.

My opinion is you should put the money in a separate bank account and take your chance.

Hello. We have a Worecester Bosch 19/24 boiler (universally believed to be a rotten boiler) which I am considering insuring for breakdown before winter.

    A few queries...

Do breakdown insurers require that the boiler is serviced before either cover or, if called out for repairs, starting work? (I think mine was serviced late 2010.

I'm a bit concerned about which cover to purchase as I've heard stories on the radio about cover being limited to service only, as opposed to the insured's understanding that the cover also included spares and fitting/labour etc (all in).

I have received a letter from Domestic and General which is offering specific to our boiler insurance for £15.50 per month, inclusive of £1500 repairs per year. Any views on this?

Would really appreciate some advice on this and how to best navigate through the varying providers.

    Thanks
    Paul :D

We have had D&G cover for 10 years which started on a 2-year old Potterton. Now pay £16.74 a month (£200.88 a year) for 'Gold' cover which is boiler and most bits of system and includes an annual 'summer' service and they remind u if they think u haven't arranged it in the summer (sometimes they get this wrong).

The 2 repairs (to the system's diverter valve and controller, not to the boiler) in 10 years were done properly by Potterton engineers who came within 2-5 days which is their standard allowance.

I chose D&G because I had worked for Potterton's service centre and was always impressed with the way D&G staff approached us with queries/problems. They always handle calls quickly and efficiently, albeit using 5p/min 0844 numbers but there are alternatives on sites like saynoto0870.com.

    Hope this helps - :0)
  • Help-link has anyone any experience of this company. recently advertised as £17 per month for a new boiler and service cover. I can't find them on the comparison sites and wondering where the catch is?
  • Has anyone any experience with cover from Scottish Power ? Whilst there are no negative comments, there are no positives either. I've just had a renewal quote from BG of £283 for Homecare 200. Scottish Power are quoting £16.90 per month with 2 free months, so a total of £169 for the first year. Thanks for any replies

I need some help, my bolier is about 11 years old (Glow worm make) and has not been serviced for the last couple of years. Last month I noticed that the boiler would switch on and be fine for about 15-20min and after that would click constantly. I don't know what's wrong with the boiler looks like it fires up once and then after sometime looses steam and then tries fireing up again and again. Any advice?

I was thinking of taking the SP basis boiler cover to get it serviced? Is it any good?
Also, has anyone heard of the Green Insurance Company Boiler and Emergency Homecare cover?

    Thanks

I am a little worried by the term 'looses(sic) steam' if you mean that literally!

The boiler heats water that is pumped to the radiators and hot water tank(assuming that you don't have a combi boiler for hot water)

If you noticed the fault last month, how do you get hot water?

No firm will give you boiler cover if you have an extant fault. It will need to be repaired at your expense first.

There are a host of things that could cause your symptoms(boiler firing for 20 mins and then on and off) One possibility is that the pump is not working and not circulating water; this sometimes happens if it hasn't been used over summer.

Personally I would get in a local gas safe fitter, ask friends/neighbours for recommendations
  • I've had a renewal notice for my BG Homecare 200, quoting £286, which is an increase of 14.5%. I phoned to ask how they could justify such an increase, and was told it was because they gave me a 10% discount last year, and if I had paid full price then, the increase now would only have been 4.5% .

I have now switched to Scottish Power Home Comfort Premium ( same as Homecare 200 ) for £169 for the first year.
  • I am having a really bad experience with Domestic & General. Their recommended heating engineers have missed three appointments but they refuse to allow me to go to a third party to pay & claim. Because it is a service policy (not insurance) I have no recourse to the FOS. Can anyone recommend a good policy that gives good service and is insurance backed?

Has any one used Insurance choice before? and what do you think of them? I asked before but not much help...I believe they are a new company and they are asking for £19/month for full cover (Central heating, plumping, electricity and other things)..actually you can even get £25 cashback through quidco...is it too good to be true?
