Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?

British Gas do a repair and cover, £99 for repair and £22/month for 12 months cover thereafter.

Sounds like a good deal to me, especially as my boiler needs a £250 repair.

My question is does anyone know if any other companies offer a similar service?

    Thanks

I was in the same boat - just got British Gas renewal for Homecare 200 and it shot up from just under £16 a month to £22.50 a month!

The best they could do on that plan was £20 a month - but they did offer me the Homecare 200 with £50 excess plan for £13 a month which is only 50p more than for new customers.

Happy with that - still includes annual service. We would have to make 2 callouts in the year before it becomes less cost effective than the non excess scheme.

So it is worth a phone call rather than just accepting the renewal.

Homeserve used to cover older boilers, caveat emptor!

We used them and they refused a repair saying it needed a flush and that was not covered.

Research first, note the caveat emptor, this is in no way a recommendation!

Just to Echo that, ours died last week, no idea what, wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to a £340 repair (£99 fix, £20 a month contract/ insurance), but it's turning colder,we needed heating and BG could get someone to me next day. The fault turned out to be in the heat exhanger and they just replace it, thats a £550 part alone to buy so turned out to be a good gamble for me but not BG. If it had just been something lose I'd have been annoyed but hey ho thats life...

The fact a 7 year old boiler needed this replaced is another matter...

Value for money is the key I think rather than just cheap. I have boiler and central heating cover with Southern Electric Home Services (aka Shield). The price is competitive. The service is terrible. I had problems all through last winter. Starting from around mid December I had constant issues with the heating and also spent several weeks with no hot water. They didn't fix the issues until June, by which point of course I didn't need heating!! During the 5-6 months that I had issues I had to take multiple days off work. I'm self employed so this cost a fortune. On more than one occasion they didn't even turn up. They provided me with some electric heaters and I was told that they would pay for the additional electricity that I used so not to be worried about using them. In the end they paid a tiny percentage of the actual cost of running the heaters.

My heating is now not functioning again. So far it's been 8 days and considering the snow and ice outside, this couldn't have come at a worse time. The symptoms of the problem are identical to before the last time they 'fixed' it, so perhaps the root cause wasn't dealt with. Up until today's visit from them I had hot water. The engineer left this evening telling me that I need another part and they will come again in 3 days. What he failed to mention is that he has totally drained the boiler and switched it off. I found out when I went to run a tap that I now have no hot water. Upon going to the boiler to check out what was wrong I found a sticker saying it wasn't safe to use.

From what I have read many people are having issues with boiler cover from the big names (including Southern Electric and British gas but not exclusively those). Think twice about whether it's worth paying for this cover or whether you are better off paying an engineer only when he/she has actually resolved your issue. For the money that I have lost by way of lost earnings since having this cover I actually could have had a new boiler installed which would have been covered by a warranty. The question I now have is whether any cover is worth having. The only thing I know for sure is that I won't be continuing to use Southern Electric / Shield and I would urge others to think seriously before giving these people their hard earned cash!
  • Had our annual service yesterday with british gas who we have had cover with for years, to be told the boiler is not running efficiently and we will soon be needing a new one (it's about 11 years old and was installed wen the house was built). Of course you are not covered for a new boiler so have set about arranging for a quote. The bg man said we can shop around and possibly find a quote cheaper than they can offer but this may make our policy invalid in the future if someone else does the installation of the new boiler instead of them.
    Any advise?

The engineer isnt saying your boiler is unsafe, just that its maybe not efficient anymore... ie burning more gas than a new one might. obviously through time it will need replaced. but i dont think you need to run out now and get one.

Any maintenence agreement will not cover a boiler is it has been installed faulty. so nothing to worry to much by the above.
