I can log into my share dealing account but have to log in differently for the alerts, but it wont accept the same passwords. I dare not try anymore because I know what the next stage is. They will lock me out of my account completely. Madness

I'm looking to sell some shares I own and want to avoid CGT. Am I right in thinking this is currently £11k/tax year?


If so I bought the shares at £3.65 many years ago and they're now valued at £19 so can I sell 716 of them and get £10,990.60 tax free?


(£15.35 capital gain x 716 shares = £10,990.60)


Also, if my sums are correct can I do the same again after the 1st April?

Sounds like a plan that would work. Surely they account for time also but I might be thinking of the old system.
You only pay tax on your profit above that allowance

Yes, that would all be fine. But don't forget that the new tax year doesn't start till 6 Apr, so don't make another sale before then.

Owen, if you are married or in a Civil Partnership and living together, transfer all the shares to your spouse/partner. You each then get the CGT allowance, so effectively you can jointly make a gain of £22K this year.

There is no liability for CGT or stamp duty when you transfer the shares into joint names.

I'm a bit confused when it comes to fees etc regarding making the sale(s)........?
As pointed out I would definitely want to make one ASAP of £10,999 or thereabouts and possibly one of the same amount after 6th April. Given my circumstances can you recommend a broker or 'deal' which would suit my requirements??
