Owen, if you are married or in a Civil Partnership and living together, transfer all the shares to your spouse/partner. You each then get the CGT allowance, so effectively you can jointly make a gain of £22K this year.

There is no liability for CGT or stamp duty when you transfer the shares into joint names.

Many thanks to you both for such a rapid response - some good points raised too!

I'm a bit confused when it comes to fees etc regarding making the sale(s)........?
As pointed out I would definitely want to make one ASAP of £10,999 or thereabouts and possibly one of the same amount after 6th April. Given my circumstances can you recommend a broker or 'deal' which would suit my requirements??

    Thanks again :)

Depending on what the shares are that you are wanting to sell you could use someone like X-O.co.uk share dealing services (£5.95 per trade) for a cheap method of selling the shares.

If you hold a share certificate - Open a Share Dealing account with X-O.co.uk (free to open and no annual account charges) then transfer your share certificates in to your account and sell them for £5.95 per share holding.

How do I transfer in stock that I hold in the form of certificates?

  • I think trading online is defo a better way to go than buying outright shares if you have the time to be on top of the markets and keep and eye on your trades

You need plenty of experience in share buying and trading before going down the CFD/spreadbetting route. And steel nadgers, obviously.
  • I have a couple of bank issue shares I want to sell, I've looked them up and think combined they are worth around £1000, whats the best way of selling them, I'm a complete novice at shares, the last ones I sold were in 1995 and I walked into the bank with a certificate, they sold them for me... simples.
I have set up a halifax share dealing account for some other shares in a company that I have bought a couple of years ago, can I sell other shares through there? or what is another better option, Im not looking at selling any others for a long time, I only will have the company ones left anyway.

If you have the actual share certs then you can transfer them to the broker and sell them online and thats the cheapest way. Halifax would handle that for you

I use these and although I rate them I have had a problem today.

I couldn't be at the PC so set a sell-all stop loss at 0.089p. It instead kicked in at 0.0854 which resulted in the loss of a significant portion of my profit.

A stop loss means that once the official bid price has moved into a certain range, but not until, then they can attempt to sell it and will take whatever price they can to avoid the price going down even further. In this case it seems like they were only able to find enough bidding volume from buyers to deal at 96% of the maximum price you wanted to deal at.

That isn't particularly unusual with penny shares which can sometimes have a 10% spread and quite volatile movements on thin volume. Without looking at the other trades that went through in the same minute, which I don't know if you've done, there is nothing to say another broker would have done better - although some brokers may canvass a wider set of market makers when attempting to get a firm price for a trade and might improve the price against the headline bid/offer that exists at that split second.

I've done really well on these over the past 4 years but sold out at £46.76 and have been waiting to get back in ever since.

Unfortunately there not heading south.Interim results are due out on Wednesday. No doubt double digit growth again and profit on target for year end.

Dying to jump back in but no luck as yet.
