No, that's not normally how it works.

They will announce a dividend amount, and an ex-dividend date, and a dividend payment date.

You have to own the shares the day before the ex-dividend date, but the dividend is not paid until the dividend payment date.

So, for Whitbread's last dividend payment see http://www.whitbread.co.uk/investors/share-price-information/dividend-information.html

So, you had to hold the shares on 3rd December, and the dividend was not paid until 9th January. The payment date is normally at least a month after the ex-dividend date.

Note that the share price normally drops by the dividend amount on the ex-dividend date, so you can't just buy the shares on the day before the ex-div date, then sell the day after and expect to pocket the dividend as a nice bonus, as the share price when you sell will have dropped.

Unless you spreadbet. Then dividends are paid on the actual ex div date which is a nice plus!

Might depend where you do it, but often they're simply 'paid' by adjusting the price of your bet with effect from the ex div date, so you only get paid when you close the bet, which could be several months down the line...

If I buy say £10000 of Whitbread shares at the close of business the day before the dividend is due I will receive this dividend the following day?
You're probably thinking of the final dividend, which will be paid on 3 July to shareholders on the register on 29 May. That would mean they become ex-div on 28 May, so you would have to buy them by next Wed.

But it doesn't really get you anywhere unless you particularly want to take an income gain as opposed to a capital gain, as the divi is 56.95p but the shares will fall in price by approximately that amount (all other things being even) on 28 May.

Its speculative, the shares can rise and pay out at the same time. Given a neutral situation the price falls by the worth now devolved but if you actually believe in a positive bias you can be paid to hold the shares.
The dividend and the price rise will both be paid in your favour, sometimes this happens with news and the company most often deliberately 'pays' a dividend near to results and by pay I mean -ex div

For the same reason, they can also fall by much more than the value of the divi, which is why I added 'all other things being even'.

    Hi all,

Im brand new to the world of share dealing, but Im hugely intrigued by it all, but before I get my toes wet, I want to soak up as much info as possible thats available.
    Free information/advice sites/books
    Good forums to join

I currently buy and sell mobile phones as a sideline to my current job, and am looking to start investing £300-400 a month.
Also wondering who best to open up an account with?

    All advice greatly appreciated.

personally i would start by sticking in say £250 to £500 into one ftse 100 stocks. and accept that the comissions will eat away most of any profits you make due to the lack of scale. go with a stock that may be a little volatile (will create a little more fun for you). But its the best way to learn when you actually have some money attached to it. I say ftse 100 as you are highly unlikely to lose a ton of the cash (dont blame me if you do though!) so it will be like paying for a learning experience. My first investment was in lloyds in around 2008/2009. a friend and i joined up, put a staggering £100 in each, comissions were £11.95 to buy and £11.95 to sell plus 0.5% stamp duty on purchase....

Anyways it went through a bonus issues, right issue, various government involvement etc . but even if i just broke even on the share price i would have lost over 10% just in the comissions, but from what i learnt during the process i would have paid a ton more for the same experience. stock ended up return around 70% after all commissions etc so it was a good first trade, but it has also encouraged me to invest in all sorts of other stocks and with a lot more on the table

as for advice of places to read up and stuff (no particular order),
    1) read the forums,
    2) find a low cost broker so you dont make the mistake i made, 3)use the share screener on III.co.uk website, helps you filter for different sorts of stocks,
4)read the forums on each stock on the III website,
    5) read up stuff on the financial times website (tip: if you can read the full article then copy and paste the title of it into google and click the link through that and it should give you access to the full article for free)

Thanks very much for all that. Really appreciate the advice. My first punt will likely be for around £1000, and then adding bits here n there as I go
