I was bought some BT shares by a relative as a child and am looking to offload them now. I already have an equiniti account so thought I'd just transfer them into electronic shares before selling them. Does anybody have any idea how long this process should take?

If you have a share certificate, sell them via xo and it should be alot cheaper. Any broker will transfer in paper certs I think

I am thinking about investing not more than about £300 (very much small time invester)
I own some (few) Standard Life shares, which I think are paper shares. (have paperwork somewhere), and all small dividends are reinvested in more shares. Thats the extent of my experience
Anyway, how does an inexperienced person buy a very small amount of shares?
I bank with Halifax/BOS and I see that they have a share dealing account. Would this be a good option?

I advise do your research before committing your money into shares especially if you only have a small amount to invest.

However to simply answer your question, I use X-O to buy shares, it costs £6 to buy and £6 to sell with no other fees. I think starting with a fantasy portfolio would be a good start.

Just to update you on this. The other drivers insurer/solicitor (its not entirely clear to me which category they fall into!) is now in contact with the rental company and their insurer. I've been informed that I am liable for my entire £1,000 excess - but at least I don't have the hassle of having to sort it all out personally.

I'm considering buying stock in IBM (ISIN: US4592001014), which appear to list both on the FTSE and NYSE.

As I'm a UK resident and will be dealing with a UK stock-broker I'm assuming it will be both easier and cheaper to buy FTSE rather than NYSE? However is there any particular disadvantage to doing this? Will for instance the shares be more difficult to eventually sell or are there additional complications as the FTSE shares are not on IBM's primary stock exchange?

I'm looking to buy actual paper share certificates (I already hold these for different companies - I dislike the idea of paying someone else to look after my shares which I'm not going to sell for years and years) and will probably do so via https://www.sharedealactive.co.uk as their commission looks competitive.

Grateful for advice anyone might have. Thanks for your help.
