Anyone recommend a competitively priced broker for those of us who (once bitten) won't touch nominee accounts with a barge-pole?0

Many years ago, broker went bust - IIRC designated (not pooled) nominee but still a nightmare to get stock (some sold by broker for no reason) because administrators/liquidators have to make sure there are no other creditor claims on stock / cash from compensation scheme - still had a loss at end and no trading for ages and ages.0 -
Offer details
What is the offer?
To celebrate our 15th birthday we’re giving you another reduced commission offer on Friday 1st June where you can:
Buy and sell UK shares online for just £3.95 commission between 12pm and 2pm.
Buy and sell international shares online for just £3.95 between 8am and 9pm.
Remember, no matter what commission you pay, share prices can go down as well as up so you might not get back the full amount you invest.
How do I take up the offer?
To take advantage of this offer simply place your UK and international trades online as usual and you’ll pay £8.00 less than the standard trading commission of £11.95.
You can place as many real-time trades as you want but this limited offer is for one day only! If your TradePlan executes during the offer period, the usual charges would still apply.
Will I pay anything else?
As always with international stocks, foreign currency conversions are required to settle international transactions. We apply a charge of 1% either side of the available exchange rate when trading. This charge will still be applicable to all international trades which execute within the offer period.

Bit of a random question, but interested to get some opinions on this: What do you recommend as the minimum amount of money to have available in order to start investing? I'm 21 y/o and have ~11k saved up. I was thinking of investing around £1,000 in a good mix of ETFs/trackers, for the long term obviously. Does this seem like a sufficient amount?0

1k per tracker would be quite normal and a small trade.
You might be best off with unit trusts more then ETF. Write the costs down like annual fees, all funds have themEquinox1000 wrote: »Many years ago, broker went bust - IIRC designated (not pooled) nominee but still a nightmare to get stock (some sold by broker for no reason) because administrators/liquidators have to make sure there are no other creditor claims on stock / cash from compensation scheme - still had a loss at end and no trading for ages and ages.
I have a broken broker! FSCS covers me I think but first thing the liquidators wrote to me so I may get some from them first hopefully but Im told its 6 months or so, been 2 so far and just talk

I think I've just found my answer - I meant 1k total for my entire portfolio :rotfl:
Think I'll leave the investing for now then and continue to read up on it. If I put any more than 1k in then I'd worry too much about my investments.0 -

it's difficult as different people have different perceptions of risk etc. Your circumstances may play a part, as does what you may need accessible cash for in the unknown future...
But £1k is a good starting point. imo.
Have you looked into social lending also as a good ROI - around 8% can be expected in that medium over the short term.
Share should make a good investment at the moment but you may not see growth for another 5 years or more....
It's all about opinions at the end of the day - that's mine.Negative equity of £100k. including the mortgage0 -
You can get over 8% lending to a major company. Surely social lending is more risky in manys ways though it is debt not equity and typically that should be more stable
The people who run O2 mobile telecoms are Telefonica. Now because that company originated from Spain and their government is wobbly, the dividend is approaching 15% annually. Thats a nice pay out, alot of their business is not spanish its UK or american so I figure this is a possible bargain
Im sure there is more like that. In the great depression it was all about dividends and solid returns because all the share prices were awful0
