Well I just dumped taking my 6.5% profit after costs.

I'm not sure if I will get bitten by this quick in and out strategy but despite being in for only 11 days I saw a profit, some grey clouds on the horizon, so cut and ran. I did the same with Tesco over 2 months (5.5%) and then got back in cheaper.

With the current volatility is any one else pursuing this type of strategy? or am I mad? :rotfl:

I didn't plan it that way but weighing up the pros and cons the sells seemed the right thing to do at the time. And while I'm getting little in interest with cash out the market I equally have a smaller average amount exposed to equities than if I took a long term strategy.

I'll go for Lloyds again at below 30 if I get the chance :cool:

Profit is always good but they can double I reckon. Your strategy is very normal, the average share deal is held for a total of 6 mins so you did well to last that long

I expect price will ping pong before finally breaking up or down. Lloyds may pay a div at some point, it used to be 35p a year

Well glad London is closed today and that the emotional dust will settle before I'm tempted to jump right back in.

At the mo looks like the markets are taking a 2-3% hit. With luck bank shares will take an even bigger emotional hit and even you sabre might be tempted

After playing around with RBS early this year with nothing's amounts of money (I bought £100 worth and just made my money back)

I've decided to go with two oil compaines I bought FOGL 1248 shares at 86.25p and had a punt at GOO with 3328 shares at 7p a share.

Massive risk but we'll see..

FOGL is an investment where I see GOO as just a gamble.

Can you tell me why if you keep your shares online, the broker owns them? How can they when they belong to you? Do you own them if you have paper certificates?

Good question candy, they are held for you. Usually the broker is a manager for the company which owns the shares. Halifax or whoever going bankrupt should not cause any loss to the shares as I understand as the company is separate.

The share holding company has a liability towards you as per the share deal contract, they own you control and are owed the worth of the shares at any time.
It is possible to deal paper shares but its for people who own 10k of each share really

There are several ways of owning shares.

The type you are referring to is where you hold them in a 'nominee' account. This means that the shares are in the broker's name but you have what is called 'beneficial' ownership - in other words you are the owner though your name doesn't appear on the share register.

Another way of holding shares online is through 'sponsored Crest membership'. This is where there shares are held electronically in your name, but not all brokers offer this option and it's only available with larger companies (FTSE250 etc?).

The third way, as you say, is paper certificates. There's no reason why you can't do this but it costs a bit more (due to more work by the broker) and woe betide you if you should lose the certificate, that can be really expensive to get a replacement.
