Going slightly off topic here i bought an inflatable goal for the kids on Wednesday from one Tesco's but took it back today to another as it kept going down but the one i took it back to don't stock it and told me i have to take it back to the original branch.Surely they could have refunded me or is that correct?

If you had your original receipt there is no reason why they couldn't have refunded your money immediately other than they were too lazy, However, if you did not have your receipt and they don't actually stock the product in that branch then it is not unreasonable for them to expect you to return it to a branch where they are stocked in order to compare and ensure it is the same item, if the store you visited did not stock this item then they may have difficulties determining whether or not the item was ever stocked by Tesco and you were entitled to return it to them.

Hope that helps I know its a little long winded!

If you haven't returned it yet I would certainly ask them to reimburse for any travelling expenses over and above the costs you would have incurred to the local store.

When you return it point out to them that at time of purchase you entered into a contract with TESCO as a company and not any one particular branch of TESCO and that as the item is not fit for the purpose for which it was sold your statutory rights have been impinged by their refusal to accept their legal obligation at the first store and you are out of pocket as a result, get indignant about it by all means but remember to stay polite and unimposing, customer services have the authority to reimburse for out of pocket expenses incurred as a result purchase going wrong and do so every day up and down the country, again something something staff don't exactly go out of their way to make public for fear of starting a goldrush, if you intimate that you may consider contacting head office it will help them to see things your way.(Unless of course the store managers are rivals in which case they would probably provide you with contact details stating go baby go!)

In each Tesco at the Customer Service desk is a leaflet for customers who are not happy. Ask for one as it details HO numbers. Often there is a payphone by the customer services desk so go and ring their freefone number or ask Customer service can you borrow their phone. That should make them take notic.

~Try phoning customer services and asking them nicely to reimburse you for petrol costs explaining you didn't feel right asking the second store but quite annoyed to find out you didn't need to go to the extra expense and time travelling to get your refund, really it won't even be a debate just look at it as another money saving (which it isn't as it has cost you) you never know you might even end up getting it free!

Went to customer services today as I had been charged twice for my UHT milk multipack, twice £2.85, and she tried to give me a £2.85 refund. Told her I wanted a £5.70 refund, which she duly complied with

Had a read of the sign there, and it does actually say at the bottom that if you have been overcharged they'll refund you and give you the product for nothing. However apparently this branch is currently running at a loss, so they are only giving customers the product for free if they specifically ask for it
Thanks to all who post constructively.

A Tesco running at a loss?? All us money savers should stop pointing out their errors and let them get back to making a crazy profit again :D
