I left my direct debit in place until my switch was complete, then cancelled it. I wouldn't have thought that was the issue though. I switched to Bulb and they were quite persistent until the switch went through.
What do you mean by quite persistent?
When/if it fails tomorrow, I may try bulb instead.
Maybe by not having paid my DD, they consider me in arrears and do not want me to switch.0 -

If you cancel your direct debit as soon as you've switched how then can your previous supplier credit your account if you've overpaid ?0 -

A DD is one way only -from your account to supplier - it does NOT need to be in place for the supplier to return overpaid monies to your account.
Still haven't heard anything from Together Energy - I'm switching away hopefully ~10th February (as long as TE don't object!!)0 -

Some suppliers won't do this unless there is an active direct debit so that they can confirm they are sending to the correct bank account. They will therefore issue a cheque instead.
In my case, I am reasonably sure I will owe money on my final bill from Together, so I'll leave the ball in their court as to how they wish me to pay it. But it won't be by overpaying in the absence of a final bill.0 -
Direct debits cannot be used to return overpaid funds (they are used to make debits only, hence the name). Overpaid money is usually returned by bank transfer (Faster Payment / BACS).

Won't TE just set up another direct debit as they did following my cancellation of my DD to one select. I only ask as I will certainly cancel my DD if they are unable to set up a new one without my authorisation.
They certainly didn't set a new DD up when I cancelled the One Select DD.
Furthermore I've cancelled DDs to Iresa and Usio in the past ,and neither of the SOLRs (Octopus and First Utility) set up DDs.
Not sure whether there is a time factor involved - I cancelled immediately that I knew the supplier had failed. It's either that ,or my bank (Santander) are more cautious!0 -

I cancelled my OS DD as soon as I'd heard about the problems posted on this thread. My payment with OS was due the 22nd Dec but I cancelled prior to this. TE set up a new DD without my knowledge and have taken two payments this month one on the 2nd and the other on the 18th so yes they can set up a new DD without permission from the account holder. My bank is also Santander.0 -

Hmm...strange -I actually cancelled DD authority on the 10th Dec.before the SOLR was appointed -wonder if that's why they couldn't set one up - my first DD had been taken on 26th November by OS0 -
My switch to SO went ahead very smoothly, even though I never had any account set up by Together.
Together (Eddington) are now shown as the Previous Supplier on the XOSERVE database.
SO ENERGY are shown as the Current Supplier.
I was genuinely wanting to know that SO really were my actual supplier - they very kindly sent me a screenshot from XOSERVE with all my details, CLEARLY showing SO as the current supplier for my address.
findmysupplier.energy must not be updated in real time, as that website still shows Eddington as the supplier.
As indicated above by another poster, perhaps some suppliers know how to "get a switch through the system" better than others.0
