Really hoping that the proverbial sh*t does not hit the fan tomorrow as I'm including a FTSE index fund in my savings goal - value differential from 01/01/2019 to 31/12/2019. If that falls over I might be in negative savings for January

Have just filled out a SOA to try and work out how much I can potentially save each month. It took me back to my debt free wannabe days but is still relevant now.

Discovered that I should be able to save £200 per month with a little wriggle room. Strangely enough I don't have that amount left over each month! I need to conquer my art supplies addiction :o

Also found out that I'm not quite pulling my weight when it comes to the household bills, so I need to sort that out with OH.

  • I have had a few frugal fails! I forgot to take lunch to work 3 days in total last week and this week! Determined to turn it around.

And my, my, is dating expensive! Esp. in London!!

On a more positive note: I contacted quidco about some cashback that had never been confirmed (over £20) and they decided to pay it out and chase the retailer themselves! YES!

I also got told by Swiss Airlines they would not be issuing compensation for a cancelled flight over Christmas (not related to the Gatwick/Drone mess - total a**holes and I'm NEVER flying with them again). I will be raising the issue to SÖP, mainly because I am convinced that Swiss schedules a late flight on purpose knowing that there is a one in three(!!!!) chance of the flight being cancelled as they would miss curfew in Zürich Airport. I've actually done some analysis on this and sending it to the arbitration service. The excuse here is always Air Traffic Control, which is considered an extraordinary circumstance, they can't argue that if they schedule the flight if they know full well that 30% of them get cancelled. (Im fairly annoyed if you can't tell!) I am at least trying to recoup my TfL costs from them. *Fingers crossed* It's only 15quid, but worth chasing.

    Reporting £50 for January.
This is the money that I have had in my purse since the beginning of December and haven't spent. This was turned into £2 coins - swapped with my mother and gone into my £2 coin pot. I have not counted my other £2 coins saved. Any spare money from my salary has gone towards paying for our trip to Japan. Will finish paying for it next month and then the real saving can begin.

£358.00 for January. I knew this month would be a pretty low one because I paid a deposit for a holiday and also paid back my mum some money I owed her.

    Onwards and upwards!

Increased the mortgage overpayment to £213/month towards the half of our mortgage with the higher interest rate. Knocked 2 years and 3 months off the term of the mortgage so I'll be 63 instead of 66. Keeping the focus on that downward trend ...

  • Feb is going to be a lower month for me. Just agreed an approx £19,000 spend on home improvements (ouch). Having a new kitchen, bathroom fitted as well as new flooring throughout. There is a £2k deposit and I’ve spread the rest of payments to be monthly so it shouldn’t drastically affect my monthly savings.

I’m also considering buying a Tesla Powerwall battery this year which would add another £8,000 to my spend. Someone persuade me against this please.

Hopeful I can still hit my annual target as I did allow some costs in my estimate and I’ve done much better in Jan than I thought I would.

MOVE AWAY FROM THE TESLA POWERBALL BATTERY! Ask yourself why so many new technology devices are being resold on the Bay if they are so great.

We have been looking at batteries and the lack of standardisation feels like the days when Video was introduced - massive debate about VHS vs Beta-max formats where you just have to step back and wait for the technology to settle a bit. While widely considered the better format, Beta-Max lost the market share and became defunct (except for those who own them). Think of it like Dash-cams. They used to cost hundreds. I saw one in Aldo's last week for £34.99... There you go. Have I persuaded you?
