moggins wrote:I'm very, very sorry that we've upset Squeaky, I'm sure none of us had that intention, I certainly didn't.
But I don't feel that we've bickered, whinged a bit, yes, but I feel that everybody has a right to state their own opinions and most of those opinions (bar mine, I have a tendency to waffle) have come across as well mannered and eloquent.
There are certain boards on here that I wouldn't post on for love nor money for fear of being jumped on in no uncertain terms. It just goes to show what a lovely board this is that no one is afraid of saying what they think.
Perhaps the word bickering was a little strong but there are a one or two threads that got a tad boisterous a few weeks ago. I think that although we should feel free to say what we think I also think that if one were speaking to someone face to face rather than anonymously through the keyboard one might 'ease-up' a little. I know that I can complain about poor service in writing far better that if I was speaking to a real flesh and blood person in front of me....maybe we just needed to soften things and take into consideration the fact that the BG's are volunteers, would I want that task? not b....y likely!0 -
Hi Squeaky, sorry to hear that you want to quit. You have done a really fantastic job sorting out the threads. The only thing I can accuse you of is being too keen to do a good job, too eager to please everyone and simply too dedicated. I suppose this was partly due to the fact that you were new to the job and partly because you wanted to prove to everyone that you were up for the challenge. Well you have shown us that you are up to the challenge. Being a BG is bloody (sorry) hard work and being one on the Old style board where everyone is so enthusiastic is even more hard work, especially when you are a volunteer for goodness sake. My suggestion is, have a break, take a holiday from us for a little while and while you are away, you never know, you might see things differently!. By the way, I never understood why we had to have an oldstyle Coffee shop in Oldstyle itself. Why couldn't there be a special "corner" in the Moneysaving ARMS just for oldstylers to chat. It is obvious that many Old Stylers want to chit chat (and why not) but don’t like the atmosphere in the Arms. Having their own corner would tell others not to venture in there unless they want to chat about what they had for dinner and where their cat could have run off to. By doing this, the BG in the Arms could deal with any problems. If a tip arises while chatting, then the person could post it somewhere in Oldstyle. It would also give you and Galtizz a break from overseeing a chat area, which isn’t what you signed up to do, but have ended up with.
Anyway, whatever you decide to do, good luck. Thanks again for all the help you have given me!

It's the caring bit that does me in. I care a lot about Old Style. I don't like dissention at all and like it even less when I feel I've contributed to it by being heavy footed and clumsy.
So now I'm going to be heavy footed around my geraniums a bit more often than I have of lateHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Board guides are not moderators and don't read every post. If you spot an inappropriate or illegal post then please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com. Cristin! Advising Squeaky to take a holiday away from 'us'--I presume you mean mse--
is like telling a chocoholic to stay away from chocolate! This site is addictive! Didn't you know that?
Squeaky keep posting. We all look forward to reading your posts.0 -

I agree. I was going to suggest a Coffee Corner within the Arms, where we gas bags could go for some nonsense chitchat, if that's what we want. I'm sure tips can be posted back there (Old Style) if they appear in the Arms and most of us can deal with those drunken louts popping in from the bar, if they start to get out of hand.
In fact - I'm off to the Arms now, to set up a coffee corner!!0 -
apprentice_tycoon wrote:When I came to this board around 6 weeks ago I felt as if I had come home...here were lots of people all talking about things that I had been interested in for years. All my friends had a bit more free money than us I knew that they wouldn't have wanted to hear about my latest 50 pence saving....I know that if I shared it here I would have been congratulated.
Now I feel VERY bad that a group of sensible mature women (I know that there are male users of the board but it is mainly women) have bickered and whinged, upsetting someone who was doing his very best to help keep things running smoothly.
I'm embarassed for us all
I'm sorry Squeaky
As someone who posted in the thread which seems to have prompted squeaky's reaction, I am assuming I am one of the people you are referring to and therefore feel a need to respond.
As sensible, mature women - points of view have been expressed. Is it perhaps unfair to belittle those points of view by referring to them in terms which are usually associated with childish behaviour?
If by expressing opinions which differ to those held personally by yourself, you have reacted by "feeling VERY bad" and "embarassed", then I am saddened to hear that. In true old fashioned style: "No one can make you feel upset without your permission". We all choose how we react, don't we?
As you stated earlier in your post, you have been here 6 weeks as have many others. By that same token, others have been here for longer and therefore have formed their opinions based on a wider perspective; are they not permitted to have and express a point of view?
Old Style celebrated it's first birthday on 22nd May. It has grown and evolved quite a bit in the past 12mths.... during that time, Cathy began as BG ... Judi has recently retired as OStyle BG and now we are blessed with squeaky and Galtizz. Some of the points expressed arise simply *because* OS has grown. One plate and one knife is all very well in a household of one .... but, when that household rises to 12, so do the needs and requirements, surely?
No one denies squeaky has made excellent work of the indexing, nor is anyone asking/expecting/wanting him to quit!
It would be even worse if squeakys decision caused people on here to break into fractions!!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fantastic..... looking forward to my first visit and chat over a cup of coffee! I am sure that others in the Arms will not venture into this area once they know it really is only for Oldstylers and if they do, I am sure (as you say) we can deal with them!0 -

Oooh, I hope you don't think by having a Coffee Corner in the Arms, I am fracturing the group. Far from it, I want to remain a member of Old Style, both posting and receiving the wonderful tips. I just thought that if some of us (and we know who we are) wanted to chat about anything, then we could reasonably try it out in the Arms. That's not to say I want it to become cliquey - far from it. The more the merrier. I just know that the site of a hunk's chest over a latte will make your day, sometimes
