Dear Margaret, I totally agree that this site is addictive. What I meant for Squeaky is to just have a holiday from being a BG for a few days as it seems to be stressing him out, and maybe just be happy with visiting and "lurking" and posting the odd message. It sounds like he needs a break from being a BG, but it also sounds as if we're too late as he has already made up his mind to go :( .

Can I suggest we bring this matter to a close now? I don't really think anything further that is constructive can be acheived. For better or worse Squeaky has made his decision clear & I think we should respect that.

Personally I would like to establish :

Is Galtizz now our only BG?

What is the actual purpose fo the Coffee Shop?
Clearly I have mis-interperated it, I thought it was an Arms of Old Style but I now understand this is not the case. I value the type of support I get from old stylers, even on non-money saving topics. I feel we are like minded & this isn't the kind of support I have come across in my brief visits to the arms, even the regulars & Martin admit it is a diffrent kettle of fish to what we are looking for. I don't feel we can have constructive/chatty threads about what we are having for dinner within one big thread but again a sub-board doesn't seem to be an option. I don't see that we can cross post chatty moments from moneysaving threads to the coffee shop as this would make follwing any topic (on or off subject matter) impossible.

Please can someone suggest a way forward as, quite frankly, I feel we are having more discussion about how we should have a discussion than actual discussions these days!

I know I can't keep everybody happy all the time - but I don't have the skills either that can keep things together without there being dissention. And I find that aspect of BG'ing distressing. Galtizz has a much better touch than I do with that sort of thing, you're all very lucky in that respect.

And as I said - I ain't going away - just going to stop being a BG.
I don't know why we have bloody board guides anyway.

Can't we just have chatty bits in the threads? Does it matter if things go off topic? I realise there's a limit to how far this can go but things usually get back on track by someone making a 'more relevant' post. A bit of chat here and there is how it goes in life - so long as the thread as a whole has a topic focus, I just skim the bits that I don't need to read.

I don't want long threads of just chat - how do you find anything in them? But I like the off-topic chat/banter/humour that has always interrupted the original question. The grocery challenges for example go off at tangents all the time but someone always comes back with something on their own challenge and it's back on track.

Lillibet please don’t take this personally and feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but Money Saving Old Style is not a chat area about any topic you like. If you want to chat, why not go to the appropriate areas especially as there is now one called Coffee corner in Money Savers Arms. There you can discuss anything you like and really go off topic without ever having to worry.

Squeaky clearly stated this in his very first post in the coffee shop in old style:

    Squeaky wrote:

This is a coffee shop. And it's Old Style.

So while it is a chat area, the subjects should still be those relating to the usual fare of our Old Style forum……….
So here is where we can have more freedom in allowing the topics to wander a bit.……….as long as the overall content is still
    Old Style”.

Can you please tell me what is old style about Big Brother, missing cats, problems with PC etc……just look at the last 100 posts in the Old style coffee shop and let me know which ones fit the old style criteria.

Don’t know if you have noticed Lilibet, but the current Oldstyle Coffee Shop thread has over 540 posts and growing by the minute. It is already the second THE LONGEST thread in the whole of Oldstyle and it has only been opened since 16th May! It is very confusing to newbies to be confronted by this chat style thread as one of the top threads and very easy for them to feel excluded and intimidated!!!!

Firstly are you saying I am not intelligent enough to move between the two? Secondly, how often is this realistically going to happen, since you are not actually discussing old style money saving tips and advice 99% of the time in the coffee shop anyway!

Lastly, I haven’t noticed “special chat threads” in other forums on MSE don't know why do you? The main reason you apparently haven’t ventured into Moneysavers arms is because you haven’t got the support you get in Old style

    Lillibet wrote:

Chicken and egg situation really. If more oldstylers use it for CHATTING then you would definitely get the support you want. Aren’t we being a bit insular, elitist and looking down on other areas of MSE by doing this? We are not giving others a chance to join in, to see that we oldstylers have a sense of humour too. In brief, that is simply not fair.

But, I realise that for some of you it will be easier to carry on using to the existing coffee shop in old style for chatting, even though it has only been in existence for a few weeks. Old habits die hard!
